SETTING UP A

CLASSROOM
By: Stormie Pyle

PHILOSOPHY

Throughout the years my views have changed and I have now

come to believe that they will be ever-changing and always a
fluid complex though process. As a teacher I believe that
children should be viewed as both students and teachers
because there are many things that we can learn from them
about how to live and enjoy life while we may be able to
provide the words and constructs for what they are feeling and
doing. I believe that children should be provided amble
opportunities to direct their own learning; I also believe that
most children need solitary time throughout the day in order
to relax and unwind.

PHILOSOPHY

One thing that I have learned through personal experience

along with reading statistics is that nature is a profound
healer, teacher, and a place where every person can feel
connected. I believe that children spend enough time
surrounded by technology that school should be a place where
they learn to be social, learn about themselves, and learn
about the world around them by both learning about different
cultures and by exploring the world right out the front door.

PHILOSOPHY

When we view children as little scientists it is easier to

understand the reason behind some of their problem
behaviors, it is important to look at the whole child and
understand what they know, what they are working on, and
their background before you can understand why they do what
they do. It can also be necessary to allow children to work
through these behaviors instead of punishing them or
redirecting them in order for them to move past it.

PHILOSOPHY

Personally I do not want to conform to one style of learning

theory because I believe that teaching and learning should be
a fluid process that changes with each child and even with
each interaction. By thinking this way I realize that I must first
get to know each child before I can begin to understand how
to best teach and assess them; honestly it doesnt matter
what I think is right, it only matters what works for each
individual child. With this I realize that I want to provide ample
opportunities for each learning style, I want to assess children
in multiple ways besides just tests, and I want to create deeprooted bonds in order to form a learning family.

PHILOSOPHY

Curriculum I believe falls along the same concept of adapting

for the children, I know that I will still be able to teach the
same general information, but display it and teach it in such a
way that is relatable to my specific students; such as if I am
teaching young children and it is winter, but we do not live
anywhere near snow then I am not going to do a lesson about
snow unless I can bring real snow in. Children need concrete
examples before they can move onto more complex abstracts.

EQUIPMENT GUIDELINES

Title 22 provides guidelines for health and safety regulations

for all child care centers.

Title 22 discusses things such as ratios of toilets to children and

staff, ratios of staff to children, how to prevent the spread of
diseases, sanitation, and sleeping arrangements.

From reading Title 22 I learned about the important health and

safety practices and the materials needed in case of an
emergency; such as emergency preparedness plans, emergency
supplies, first-aid kit materials, sanitation procedures, and food
requirements.

EQUIPMENT GUIDELINES

ITERS: Infant and Toddler Environmental Rating Scale

The ITERS is a tool for staff to use that discusses all areas of the
classroom, what is developmentally appropriate, and best practices.

The ITERS talks about the amount of child art, including 3D art;
interactions with children; the centers in the classroom; and the
materials used.

From the ITERS I learned about the importance of the materials used in
a classroom, providing ample opportunities for all areas of
development, treating children with respect, using the outdoors as an
extension of the classroom and about the use of centers when creating
curriculum.

EQUIPMENT GUIDELINES

NAEYC: the National Association for the Education of Young

Children

NAEYC produces newsletters, magazines, and brochures to be used by

the educators of young children

NAEYC discusses a wide range of topics ranging for ethics to materials

I have learned from NAEYC that it is important to provide ample

curriculum in all areas of development with appropriate expectations.
They also discuss the importance of play for young children and how
play is the means of learning; children learn best when they are
interested and engaged and who is truly interested in handouts and
practice worksheets.

EQUIPMENT GUIDELINES

PBS wrote an article about the qualities of a good classroom,

from the article it appears to have been written for parents but
also provides information to caregivers about what they should
include

They discuss having a consistent schedule, providing a wide

array of materials and activities, having ample conversations
between staff and children.

From this article I learned that especially at a young age it is

highly important to have a routine schedule, this helps the
child feel safe and secure and prepared to learn. It is also
highly important that school and home communicate and
provide an environment that is consistent with its expectations
and values.

CLASSROOM INTRODUCTION

For my classroom I wanted to include many centers and be able to

provide a wide array of materials that could be left out for the vast
majority of the time. I would prefer a classroom with a kitchen area
for meal prep and for doing cooking activities. I have also included
some of the outdoor area because nature is a very critical piece of
curriculum for young children. I chose to use large climbing and
play structures because I feel that it is highly important for children
to be able to use both their gross and fine motor skills. I also
included a parent area because I feel that this will be a good area
for parents to say good-bye to children and to both read about
what has been going on and talk with staff. I also tried to separate
the louder activities from the activities that are more quiet.

SHOPPING LIST FOR 12 TODDLERS

AGE 24-36 MONTHS

I have compiled a complete list of materials that I would like to see

in my classroom. I have included pictures of items that were not
fully explained through their names. While compiling a list of books
I came to realize that there are many more books which I would
like to add, but this is my starting point. It would also be beneficial
to get duplicates of the childrens favorite books. I have also
included books in Spanish and ASL and would include books from
other languages if there were families who spoke that language.
The Health and Safety section contains many items required in the
classroom setting, but I have not included many things that would
be purchased by the larger school such as soap, paper-towels, or
the installment of toddler toilets.
