She finally consulted a specialist who subjected Celine to some tests. Two days before Christmas 2003, Celine was diagnosed with dementia, Six months later, the diagnosis was confirmed as Alzheimer's disease, which is the most common cause of dementia, 6 Surprisingly, Joyce felt a sense of relief and quiet resignation. “Whatever comes my way, 1 20 will handle it. After the 30 9 operation, her memory deteriorated further. After the surgery, Joyce knew that she wouldn't be able to manage on her own. Up to that point, her brother had been the sole breadwinner, but the bills were piling up and it was more than he could handle. In order to cope, Joyce placed her ‘mother in a daycare centre and looked for part-time work. In 2010, Joyce noticed that for two days, Celine was leaning to her left and her movements 35 10 were sluggish. Not wanting to take any chances, Joyce took her to the hospital. Her organs were failing and doctors cautioned 40 Joyce that she might not live for much longer. After a long hospital stay, Celine was finally discharged. She went home a day after her 12 eighty-fifth birthday.
