Visual Communication

Throughout this project I learned about primitive and modern photography.

Although the photos I have choosen for my project are overall, ambiguous and possess
many colors they are not related. The difficulty for finding pictures varied for each word.
Words like depth and accuracy were easy finds. Most picture within my slides embody
these words along with others. However flatness the opposite of depth was the most
difficult one for me to find. Throughout this project I discovered that in modern
photography artists produce clear and dramatic photos which is the opposite of flatness.
To make a word easier to find I would look up the definition and find synonyms. For
examples sequential, instead of typing sequential you could use the word order. Or if
you were familiar with a word you could use that represents the image in your head, for
example the word opacity. When I read the word opacity I thought of fog so I looked up
a foggy window.

One of the artist I choose was Carla Anderson. Andersons photographs often
center around old and rustic buildings, such plantations and farms emphasizing on their
informal qualities such as the bright colors and patchwork. I was first drawn to her
picture State Highway 704, Stokes County, North Carolina because of its unique
qualities. The picture contains a garden filled abstract objects such as neon colored
shoes and whimsical decorations. The second picture I choose was 123 Allen Street,
Kosciusko, Attala County, Mississippi. This picture is a staple pieces in her collection,
because it involved both the patchwork and rustic structures anderson pictures are
centered around. The picture contains a barn with concave roof and and a patchwork
color scheme including a rusty orange, baby blue, navy and white. Both pictures
embodied the word instability.Though it was an artistic impulse the pictures were a little
unfocused and included a incohesive color schemes. The unfocused camera quality
may have to do with the fact that the picture was taken in 1997, luckily it gives the
picture a unique retro vibe thats not seen often today.
The second artist I choose was Jorge Macias . Maciass pictures are the opposite
of Andersons because it lacks bright colors. Our knowledge of Macias work is limited
but as far as I can tell his aesthetic centers around a black and white color scheme and
uses contrast to enhance drama within his pictures. A lot of his photos include detailed
architecture such as churches. The first picture I choose was a peacock. Like all of the
pictures the peacock is colorless and has definition within the middle of its feathers and
face. The second photo I choose was of an old catholic church. This picture was taken
at an upward angle giving drama within the windows. It of course is in black and white
like all of his other photos. Both pictures embodied depth because of the dark color

contrast . Like Andersons work I was drawn to the old fashioned qualities of there
pictures.
