TEKS
111.17. Mathematics, Grade 5.
(10) Measurement. The student applies measurement
concepts involving length (including perimeter), area,
capacity/volume, and weight/mass to solve problems.
The student is expected to:
(C) select and use appropriate units and formulas to
measure length, perimeter, area, and volume.

Non- Fiction Picture Book

Thegreatpolygoncaper.Hauppauge,NY:Barron'sEducationalSeries.

Summary: Lotsis Marbles, the mayor of the city Mathoplis is trying to

restore his city, since The Shiftless Gang is bring disorder to the city.
He needs help badly, so he gets help from Edge Master whos real
name is Kent Clark. Together they help solve problems throughout the
city dealing with various shapes and sizes.

How to use: This book is great for a 5th grade classroom learning and
reviewing the concepts of perimeter. I would read this to my classroom
and go through the problems in the book on the board so the students
can visualize it better.

Non-Fiction Picture Book

Perimeter,area,andvolume:Amonsterbookofdimensions.NewYork:HolidayHouse.

Summary: Children are welcomed to a 3-D movie premiere and must

help the cast of monsters. Children will help with calculating perimeter,
area, and volume.
How to use: For this book I would read it out loud and have handouts
to go with the problems throughout the book. Have students in groups
to work together on a certain problem. Once the students are finish go
over the problems to make sure everyone fully understands how they
got their answers.

Workbook

Geometry.LosGatos,CA:MathEssentials.

Summary: This workbook provides extra help involving the introduction

to Geometry lessons. This book includes; vocabulary, points, lines and
planes, perimeter, area, volume, and the Pythagorean theorem.

How to use: Even though this book is used in upper level classes, I
would still use the techniques in this book for my students. Also base
some worksheets off of the problems used in this workbook.

Fiction Book

Perimeterandareaattheamusementpark.Mankato,Minn.:CapstonePress.

Summary: Using real life situations this book takes learning Perimeter
and Area to a whole new level. Students can enjoy the problems and
learning perimeter at the amusement park.
How to use: I would use this lesson (if suitable) close to a holiday,
maybe spring break or summer time. So students could have a fun
time with the perimeter at an amusement park and get them and I
ready for the upcoming break.

Non- Fiction Book

Spaghettiandmeatballsforall!:Amathematicalstory.NewYork:Scholastic.

Summary: The Comforts are having a reunion for their big family.
While Mr. Comfort is cooking spaghetti and meatballs for dinner, Mrs.
Comfort is making the eight tables with thirty-two chairs for everyone
coming.

How to use: This book is great introduction for perimeter and also
area. So I would read this book at the very beginning of the lesson. It
gets the students thinking about area and perimeter instead of just
jumping straight into taking notes.

IXL math practice - Perimeter (Fifth grade). (n.d.). Retrieved March 17,
2015, from http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-5/perimeter

Summary: This website is filled with lots of activities for all different
math lessons and grade levels. Particularly this website has a great
tool to help students with learning perimeter. It shows you a picture on
grid paper and then asks for the perimeter. You can get the answer
correct and move on to another problem, or if you get the answer
wrong it gives you step by step on how to solve the perimeter problem.
This website is just great all around for students who want to practice
learning perimeter or get extra help.

Summary: This website is a fun exercise for 5th grade students

involving perimeter of squares. How you play is each level there is a
question-involving perimeter and in order to get to the next level you
must get it right. There is a check button and an explain button for the
students who are still struggling. This is just a fun way of playing with
the idea of perimeter.

Summary: This video clip is of a 5th grade classroom singing a

perimeter song. The song is to help students remember how to find the
perimeter of a shape. It is a fun way for students to remember the
concepts of perimeter and also is nice to do something different other
than notes and worksheets.

Iphone/ Ipad App

5th Grade STAAR Math By Education Galaxy in Education
Summary: This app is for teachers and students, which is great! The
teachers can download this app on IPads or whatever they prefer to
asses the students. The questions are supported for TEKS questions
and helps students practice these questions. What is great is these
questions were built by 5th grade teachers to help 5th grade students
succeed in all areas of mathematics.
