Background Information
Date: 9/30/15

School: Cleveland Elementary

Grade Level: 2nd

Lesson Focus:
Underhand throwing- accuracy.

# Of students: 20

Equipment and Facilities:

Blacktop
4 hula hoops
30 Bean bags
20 Soft balls
8 cones

Safety Considerations:
When the students are throwing the ball up in the air
and trying to catch it they might bump into each
other since theyre not looking where they are going.
Before the students start the station I will tell them to
spread out from each other. If they do run in to each
other Ill check if theyre ok, and if theyre not ok
then I will send them to the school nurse.
Lesson Specifics
Behavioral Contingencies:
Previously Learned Skills:
I will give students 3 chances/strikes before they have Skipping, galloping, jumping, teamwork, underhand
to go to the cafeteria. If I give a strike I need to
throwing.
explain what the strike is for.
Teaching Strategy:
Academic Language:
-Encouraging
Step, swing, follow through, clap, accuracy, aim,
-hands-on. If the students are doing the technique
distance
wrong I will step in and correct them by showing
them how to properly do it and what theyre doing
wrong.

Student
Objectives:

Psychomotor (P): SWBAT underhand throw an object using the correct cues of the skill,
either aiming to get the object in an area or to a person.
Cognitive (C): SWBAT remember the COTS of underhand throwing from the previous lesson
and recite the COTS throughout the lesson.
H-R Fitness (H): SWBAT recognize the fun, enjoyment and challenges physical education
involves. If an activity is too easy for a student then they can increase the distance to make it
more challenging.

CALIFORNIA PHYSICAL EDUCATION MODEL CONTENT STANDARDS:

I. Demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles and strategies that apply to the learning and
performance of physical activities.

II. Assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and performance.
NASPE PHYSICAL EDUCATION CONTENT STANDARDS a physically literate person:
1. Applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.
2. Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others.
3. Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self- expression, and/or social interaction.
Describe the pre-class arrangement
Teacher: Waiting for the students to arrive. Standing by the white line ready to tell the students to put their bags
away and sit on the white line quietly.
Students: Walking towards the area we are going to be doing PE on.
Equipment: Set up one side of the court, away from where the students bags are.

Good afternoon Tiger Pride!
Today we are going to play
sharks and minnows. Is
anyone familiar with this
game?
There will be three sharks to

class will be minnows. The

Shark attack then the
minnows start running to the
other side of the court trying
not to get tagged. If you do
get tagged you become
seaweed which means you
have to stand where you were

when they come past you.
Can I have three volunteers
to be sharks? (Give sharks
bibs to put on).
Minnows stand on the white
line.
Transition
Stop the game. Get the
students to all sit down on
the white line and wait
quietly.
Set Induction:
Today were going to be
doing underhand throwing at
different stations. This is to
practice your accuracy.
Purpose:
Accuracy is important
because in every sport that is
played with a ball there is
always a target and you want
to be able to hit the target.

Lesson Core - Task 1:

Students are going to be put
into groups. There will be
one group at each station.
The first station will have
three hula hoops on the
ground. The students will
have a number of bean bags
at this station so they can do

interaction.
The instant activity is always
fun so the students will realize
that exercise can be good for
you as they feel their heart
rate is high and its
enjoyable.

Start/Stop Signals: I will say

Tiger Pride listen up. If they
keep on talking then I will tell
them that we wont start any
activity until theyre quiet.
Grouping Strategies:
I am going to divide the class
into 4 groups. I will do this by
counting off 4 or 5 people
(depending on how many
students turn up) and putting
them as groups.

6. Applies knowledge of
concepts, principles,
strategies and tactics
related to movement and
performance.
There is a strategy for
underhand throwing and the
students will apply their
knowledge of how to do it
correctly.

7. Exhibits responsible
personal and social
behavior that respects self
and others.
As the students are in groups
they need to be able to respect
their group members.

the person behind them go. If
they get the bean bag in the
hoop they get a point.
At the second station the
students will be throwing the
ball up in the air and seeing
how many claps they can do
before the ball comes back
down for them to catch it.
At the third station the
students will be underhand
throwing a ball trying to
knock over cones. There will
be three cones in front of
them. Their aim is to knock
over all the cones.
At the fourth station the
students will be underhand
throwing the ball to each
other, either in twos or threes
depending on how many
students in the group. Every
time they catch the ball they
take a step backwards
increasing the distance
between them.
Demonstration Plan:
When Im doing the
instructions I will do a quick
demonstration of each
station.
Questions to Check

you get if you throw the

I will stop the students at
their stations and I will get
the students to pick up all the

Review:
What skill did everyone
practice today? (Underhand
throwing)
Does everyone feel more
confident?
Can everyone call out the
cues while I do the action?
Next week were going to
start football and its going
to be lots of fun.
Bye everyone!

ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES: I will informally assess the students by seeing how well they go
in the stations. If theyre knocking the cones over or getting the bean bags in the hula hoops then
I know they are getting better.
