Year at a Glance

SKOKIESHUL.ORG
From very early on we are taught the importance
of being open to new experiences. Whether its
being introduced to our first green vegetables or
taking on a musical instrument, new experiences
are the bedrock of intellectual, social and physical
development. Sadly, as we get older we become
more stagnant and tend to shy away from new
opportunities. The routine and everyday is perhaps
most dangerous when it comes to Avodat Hashem.
In Elul the refrain which reverberates on our lips is
Al Tashlicheinu leeit Ziknah, do not cast us off into
old age. The Maggid of Mezerich commented that
old age doesnt refer to years or wrinkles but rather
stubbornness and unwillingness to grow and expand
our horizons.
This year please consider each of our shuls
wonderful offerings not as an opportunity to find
your own niche and comfort zone, but rather as a
chance to expand your mind beyond that which you
are accustomed. So choose a new class, something
youve never before studied, participate in our social
programs and try and meet new people. Check
out the Sephardic minyan or hashkama minyan one

symposium of
generations
Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik once referred to his shiur
as a symposium of generations. He described how
through teaching, he felt as though he was introducing
his students to the Rambam, Rashi, Rabbi Akiva Eiger,
and all of the other great Talmudic scholars throughout
our history. In the Ravs classroom generations that
lived centuries apart were able to debate, challenge and,
ultimately, inspire one another.

The Prime
Ministers: The
Pioneers (2013)
January 9, 2016
VVV
The
Prime
Ministers:
The
Pioneers, is the 13th
release by Moriah
Films, the Academy
Award-winning
documentary
filmmaking division of the Simon Wiesenthal
Center. Based on the best- selling book
by Ambassador Yehuda Avner, The Prime
Ministers: The Pioneers takes the audience
inside the offices of Israels Prime Ministers
through the eyes of an insider, Yehuda Avner,
who served as a chief aide, English language
note-taker and speech writer to Levi Eshkol,
Golda Meir, Yitzhak Rabin, Menachem Begin,2
and Shimon Peres. The first of two parts,
The Prime Ministers: The Pioneers focuses
on Ambassador Avners years working with
Prime Ministers Levi Eshkol and Golda Meir
and then US Ambassador Yitzhak Rabin and
reveals new details about the Six-Day War,
the development of Israels close strategic
relationship with the United States, the fight
against terrorism, the Yom Kippur War and
its aftermath. In the spring of 2014, the
second film based on Ambassador Avners
book, The Prime Ministers: Soldiers and
Peacemakers, will be released, examining
Ambassador Avners experiences with Prime
Ministers Yitzhak Rabin, Menachem Begin
and Shimon Peres as well as his service as
Israels Ambassador to England. The early
efforts at negotiating agreements with Egypt,
the raid on Entebbe, Anwar Sadats historic
visit to Jerusalem, the Camp David Accords,
the bombing of Iraqs nuclear facility, the
war in Lebanon, the Oslo Accords and the
ongoing struggle to make peace with Israels
Arab neighbors and the Palestinians are
some of the topics covered as The Prime
Ministers: Soldiers and Peacemakers builds
to its dramatic and emotional conclusion.
Weaving a rich tapestry of history and
personal testimonies, The Prime Ministers
brings some of the most important events of
the 20th and 21st centuries to life. Starring
the voices of Sandra Bullock as Golda Meir,
