A study of shapes and their strength.

1. Triangle

Forces are evenly spread out causing the structure to be in equilibrium.

Effectively shown in the creation of the truss bridge

2. Square
Forces are spread unevenly over the structure. Will cause deformities when load
is acted on it.

Possible effects if such structure is applied into a construction

3. Arch

Compression effect of the arch. Pretty similar to that of a triangle. Can possibly
be mapped out with triangles.

Usage of arches in bridge making.

Note: Keystone is required to set the bridge in place.

4. Columns
Used widely in construction. However, weight must be carefully distributed and
many columns are required to hold weight. If not deformation of the column may
occur.

Columns used for bridge building. As seen, its clearly feasible but the sheer
amount of columns used are astounding.

Conclusion Triangle is the strongest shape by far. Another possibility will be the
arch. However, the arch is built upon the idea of a triangle and the force diagram
is roughly similar to that of a triangles. Squares are not possible as they deform
easily. However, the idea of squares made with 2 triangles or 4 triangles can be
explored. Finally, columns are possible but we are looking at least materials used
so we have to rule out columns since we have better alternatives. The end result
is we are looking at structures which has an effective use of triangles.
