Manner of Articulation

Plosive
A plosive is a sound produced by the build
up of air from the lungs behind a barrier
followed by a sudden release of the
pressurized air.
The two phases of a plosive production are
called implosion and explosion (aspiration).
Plosive sounds sometimes referred as
stops.
The sounds are: /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/

Nasal
A nasal sound is a sound produced by
emission of air through the nasal
cavity.
The sounds are /m/, /n/, //

Fricative
A fricative is a sound characterized by the
emission of a frictionlike noise created by the
air stream escaping through a narrow orifice
The sounds are /f/, /v,/, //,//,/s/,/z/,//,//,
and /h/

Approximants
An approximants is a sound produced
by the proximity of two articulators
without turbulence.
The sounds are /r/, /j/, and /w/

Lateral Approximants
A lateral approximants possesses all
the features of approximants with the
addition of the lateral flow of the
stream from the oral cavity.
The sound is /l/

Voicing
The aspect of voicing to consider are
voiced consonants (those created by
vibration of the vocal folds during
production) and voiceless or unvoiced
consonants (those created by the
absence of vibration of the vocal folds
production).
