Please respond to the following prompts:

1 Summarize the key points you learned from this Professional
Development experience.
The Pre-Service Teacher Workshop allowed each of the attendants to choose
workshops in each of the three sessions that were conducted throughout the
day. The three workshops that I attended were: Using Primary Source
Documents (first 10 minutes-Physical Activity), Guiding Student Success and
Postsecondary Readiness, and Student Information in West Virginia: Data
Privacy, Access, and ZoomWV. The Primary Source Documents/Physical
Activity session reinforced what I already knew about using primary sources
documents in the classroom as well as introducing me to utilizing physical
activity in all subjects in school. The Student Success and Postsecondary
Readiness workshop focused on assisting students in preparing for their
futures after high school. I found this workshop to be particularly helpful as
many secondary teachers will have to do advising with students in taking
classes that will benefit their future goals. The Data Privacy, Access, and
ZoomWV workshop was probably the most beneficial workshop session of
the day. I learned rules on the protection and proper use of student
information.
2 Discuss how these key points connect to your content area.
All three of these workshops will influence my content area. Using primary
sources is a vital part of the Social Studies classroom. Studying primary
sources as learning tool promotes critical thinking and also provides a firsthand look into a time period. Promoting secondary readiness goes back to
the fact that I need to ensure that I am creating lessons that promote higherlevels of Blooms taxonomy to ensure that students can be successful in
college and in achieving their postsecondary goals. The data protection
session connects to Social Studies (and all other content areas) by showing

how to protect student information. As a future Social Studies instructor, it is

important to ensure that all student information is held to the highest
importance and protected.
3 Share how you might use this new information in your future
classroom.
I already knew about using primary sources in the classroom, but this
workshop session did reinforce using physical activity in the classroom
as well. For my future classroom, I could use simple physical activities
such as using jumping jacks (as shown in the session) for when
students get a correct answer to a question. Physical activity promotes
students who are active, healthy, and focused. I will definitely
considered students being postsecondary ready for when I create my
lesson plans I the future. It is not so much that students learn the
material for an assessment, but have a mastery of said material. I will
also keep what I learned in the data protection session in mind when
dealing with student information in the future. Protecting student
information is highly important when it comes to be an educator.
