Weebly is a freemium site that provides an internet based suite of both free
and paid tools that allows the creation of personal websites. Accessible via a
computer or tablet, Weebly also provides an App that allows users to create and
access websites from their mobile devices.

General Description: Weebly provides a number of templates to which a variety of elements can be
dragged and dropped. These elements include text, images, video and
ecommerce. Pages created can have a number of sub-pages nested beneath
them to separate and organize content.

Grade Level:

Individuals under the age of 13 are prohibited from creating or using accounts
through Weebly.com.
My context is to use Weebly with Grade 11 students.
Business Investments and Management 11

Class/Course/Subject:

This is a project based course requiring students to investigate live real time
financial data to create and share projects that aid in the ongoing development
of knowledge.
Create a page that supports discussion.
Example: Students must create a response to a leading question then review and

Activity Idea 2: Example: Collectively investigate the concept of market driven stock prices

through the investigation of supply and demand, creating a class Weebly in the
topic or student Weeblys that are linked.
Create student webpages that showcases students work, i.e. an e-portfolio

Activity Idea 3: Weebly pages can be organised so that pages match learning objectives.

Class showcase. As per a personal e-portfolio, a class website could be created to


share the progress being made in achieving various learning outcomes.

Adapted Activity
Idea: This could also act as a means to communicate with parents and the community
at large.

systems is privilege.

2.1 Access to systems is granted by the District, access to ICS is a privilege, not
a right. Staff, students, parents, and educational partners using ICS resources
are therefore expected to do so in a responsible, ethical manner in observance

2.2 Public and guest wireless access will be provided only after accepting the
online terms of use agreement. Non-district peripheral, mobile or personal
devices must not interfere with the function of the network or its security.

2.4 The district reserves the right to inspect and remove electronic devices
connected to ICS networks for inappropriate use or for files or software that
threaten the operation of the network.

1.1 Handheld devices Shall include all portable communication devices, which
include but are not limited to the following:
Cell phones and Smartphones,
Small tablets and handheld devices using mobile operating
Other electronic devices that facilitate communications (either verbal, visual
or text), but do not include laptop computers
1.2 School Hours School Hours shall include the following:
any time between the first bell and the last bell or during any instructional
time outside school hours
any time while riding a School District bus and/or other School District
provided transportation
any time away from school while participating in school sponsored events
(e.g. field trips, athletic or cultural events, etc.)
any time at a school function that occurs outside of the normal school day
(e.g. school dances, athletic events, etc.)
2. Cyber bullying The use of any electronic communications device to convey
a message in any form (text, image, audio, or video) that defames, intimidates,
harasses or is otherwise intended to harm, insult or humiliate another in a
deliberate, repeated or hostile or unwanted manner under a persons false or
true identity.
3. The use of a handheld device(s), such as a Smartphone, must never be used
by students inside school buildings unless it has been authorized by a Principal
and/or teacher. Appropriate use of these devices is allowed outside of school
buildings and school hours.
4. The possession and/or use of a handheld device(s) by students at school,
including during an emergency, shall be subject to the following:
4.1 Students may possess handheld devices at school, but they must be turned
off and kept out of sight during school hours unless authorized by a
teacher/administrator to complete a required learning activity during
classroom instruction.
4.2 Students shall not use a handheld device(s) for any purpose during a school
emergency, unless specific authorization is provided by a person in authority

(e.g. principal, teacher, police officer, etc.)
4.3 At no time should a handheld device(s) be used to capture an image or a
voice recording of another person during school hours, unless specific
authorization is provided by a Principal and/or teacher.
4.4 At no time should a handheld device(s) be used for the purpose of cyber
bullying.
4.5 A teacher may require students to surrender a handheld device(s) during a
classroom examination or at any time based on classroom objectives or due to
a breach of this policy.
4.6 The School District assumes no responsibility for the personal property of
students, including handheld devices. Students and parents are urged to give
appropriate consideration to what is brought to school.
5. Schools shall inform students and parents of this policy and the expectations
regarding the use of handheld devices.
6. School staff have a duty to protect the privacy of student information
contained on handheld devices. Phones that are temporarily confiscated must
be kept in a secure location and must not be accessed unless there are
reasonable grounds to believe the device was used in committing an offence
against school rules.
8. Students who are in contravention of this procedure may be subject to
discipline by the principal.
9. Students may use handheld devices for school learning activities under the
supervision of a teacher. When a handheld device is used to complete a
classroom activity, the supervising teacher can request access to the device to
view progress on the learning activity or to confirm inappropriate activity
conducted during the learning session.
10. When available, students may bring their own devices and access guest
networks but must comply with this policy.

Key Point: Students should be made aware of their digital footprint
1.1 Student online behaviour should reflect the Abbotsford School District
values of respect, trust, integrity, communication, and teamwork.
1.2 Any use of social media must observe the terms or contract agreement of
the online resource. A disclaimer/permission slip is required and must be
signed by parents/guardians.
1.3 Students must consider the potential consequences of what they post
online. What students contribute leaves a digital footprint for all to see.
Students should only post what they would want friends, peers, parents,
teachers, or a future employer to see.
1.4 School related online activities are an extension of the classroom and
subject to all school and district expectations. What is inappropriate in the
classroom is also inappropriate online.
1.5 Students must be safe online. Students should never give out personal
information, including, but not limited to, last names, birth dates, phone
numbers, addresses and pictures. Students must not share their password
with anyone except their teachers and parents/guardians.
1.6 Linking to other websites to support a students thoughts and ideas is
recommended; however students must be sure to read the entire article prior
to linking, to ensure that all information is appropriate in a school setting.
1.7 Students must do their own work. They must not use intellectual property
without permission. It is a violation of copyright law to copy and paste others
thoughts. When paraphrasing anothers idea(s), the sources must be cited.
1.8 Pictures are protected under copyright laws. Students must verify that
they have permission to use an image.
1.9 Students must not intentionally misrepresent themselves or use someone
elses identity.
1.10 Students must report any content or behaviour that is not suitable in the
school environment.
1.11 Students who do not abide by these terms and conditions may face
disciplinary action.

Re: Social Media Consent Form


During semester one of the 2015/16 school year, the Business Investment and Management 11 class will
be using the online web development tool, Weebly (http://www.weebly.com, to showcase and share
their learning. Weebly is a powerful tool that will empower students to create and showcase their work,
whilst supporting not only their learning, but also the learning of theirs peers.
Students will be required to create their own free account so that they may build a website. This will
allow then to easily show their learning, participate in discussions and constructively comment on
others work. This will all occur in an online environment.
Prior to using Weebly, students will complete a unit on digital citizenship and the risks associated with
social media. Privacy considerations associated with the use of Weebly include;
Open System: Weebly is an open system and as such pages can be viewed by the public.
Personal Identifiable Information: Personal identifiable information is information that allows
the user to be identified by the greater user base. For our use if Weebly, no personal
information, including names and images, will be used in the creation of student accounts.
Names will not be referenced in discussion posts or displayed in completed works.
Data Storage: The server for Weebly is held outside of Canada in the United States. Information
held on these servers is subject to privacy laws of the jurisdiction where the data is held and
may be subject to review by the government and policing forces of the specific jurisdiction.

Specific Expectations, Terms & Conditions of Students Using Technology:


1. Users will review the specific technologies functions, capabilities, user agreements, terms
of service and privacy policies before engaging with the technology so s to be aware of the
repercussions and conditions of using the technologies.
2. Users will not provide any personally identifiable information, including images, regarding
themselves OR of any other user, including names, ages, sex, date of birth.
3. Users will not share password(s) or the course code(s) with unauthorized individuals.
4. Users will not access or use anothers individual password protected account.
5. Users will not use inappropriate language in any and all my communications.
6. Users will respect the rights and freedoms of others.
7. Users will not hurt or mistreat others by what I create and share.
8. Users will not criticize the communication of others.
9. Users will follow the rules of behavior or etiquette required for use of the technologies as
defined by the course teacher(s) and the school district, and will immediately report any
potential or actual instances of cyber bullying to the relevant course teacher so that the
behavior or situation can be addressed.
10. Users will follow the relevant course teachers directions for the identified use and
purpose of engaging these technologies for the course project or activity.
11. Users will, at all times use the technologies in a privacy-sensitive manner, refraining from
including identifiable personal information in posts and private messages, or including any
other individuals identifiable personal information.
12. Users will not make statements or express opinions about any other identifiable
individuals personal life or character.
13. Users will immediately report any potential, foreseeable, or actual privacy invasions to the
courses teacher(s) so that the problem, breach, or error can be addressed and rectified.
14. Any user identified as a security risk or having a history of problems with school
computer systems may be denied access to the Districts networks and services.
He/she will be required to either complete the assignments on a home computer or if
computer use is forbidden then in an alternate format identified by the teacher.

Reason for Use: Providing students an opportunity to work together, share their developing
understanding and showcase their work is essential to deepening their knowledge. Weebly is an online
tool that allows students to develop their own websites, blog and participate in discussion boards. It is a
powerful tool that allows students to make connections and crate sharable e-portfolios.
What is Weebly? Weebly is a freemium site that provides an internet based suite of both free and paid

As a tool, it allows users to showcase their work, create blog pages and participate in ongoing
discussions.
Possible Risk, Internet-Based Experience:
Weebly provides an Open online user interface. As such, users and the information posted on the
website that they create can be viewed by other internet users. Prior to use, students would be
provided lessons on Digital Citizenship and Internet safety. Within the classroom environment, students
would not be permitted to share any personally identifiable information, including images, about
themselves or any other user.
Weebly servers and the information held on them are found outside of Canada. As such, users are not
afforded the protection of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA), rather the
laws governing the jurisdiction of where the server is held will be applicable.

The use of technology in education is becoming increasingly common. Many courses, such as Business
and Investment Management 11, are project based courses that require students to research current
data and present their learning in a variety of forms. Weebly supports the sharing and showcasing of
student learning. If you choose not to allow your child to participate in Weebly, an alternate assignment
will be provided that meets the learning outcomes.
