Unit 3 Assignment 1

Quantitative research:
Quantitative research involves the ordering of numerical data.
The term Quantitative research refers to the type of information
that is based in quantities and it is all used through facts and
figures. An example of this is television ratings which are valid
statistics that represent quantitative research. Furthermore
quantitative research is very common in the media side of the
community. Example of quantitative research below:

This image above is the statistics of the most popular television

programmes shown on August 23rd. furthermore the data has
been shown through the use of quantitative data, as there is
numeric data used to inform people with fact and figures of
popular programmes. As you can see the great British bake off
way the most popular with over 12,006 views.
Carrying on the point, quantitative data is commonly seen as a
factual purpose of delivering data involving statics of a large
amount. Another example of quantitative data is the box office.

The screenshot above is an image of the quantitative data from

the box office. The way you can acknowledge that this is
quantitative data is the same as the previous example of the
statics of the television programmes. This is the use of numbers
to prove a large amount of data in a more organised way.
The screen shot coming from the box office is telling us that in
August from the 25th- 29th that the most weekend gross film was
Lucy taking the top spot with 3,076,997 for universal studios
in only 4 days . However the second spot was given to the
Inbetweeners 2 as the film gave entertainment 2,366,161.

This screenshot is taken of National Readership Survey

website and it is demonstrating the statistics of Newspaper and
supplements. Furthermore, the screenshot shows the adults
statistics because on the table ABC1 illustrates the amount of
population watching a certain programme, yet this table shows
only adults side of the table because it is putting the
community into categories of how many people are watching
programmes that are owned by the company.

Qualitative research:

Qualitative research is when you get facts and other statistics

through getting other peoples opinions in a certain area.

This is a screen shot of movie reviews of certain films that have

already been released or are about to be released. Each film,
TV show is given a score with a percentage as 100% being the
highest score. The 3 best films that seemed to be the favourites
to the reviewers is inside out with 98% followed by Mission
impossible at 93% and finally Straight Outta Compton with
90%. The 3 films that have been reviewed have used the
research method of qualitative data. This is proven as the
percentages are created by peoples opinions of the film and
debated on whether the individuals enjoyed or disliked the film.

This is an image of Qualitative data being used to determine

the scores of videogames. The website IGN have been
reviewing the games gave Metal Gear Solid V the biggest
praise with a rating of 10/10 masterpiece this use of
qualitative data is different to the other used of it for films as
there are not using percentages to give the games a score but
just marks out 0f 10 . Which means that it is still based on
peoples opinions, however it means that less people have
rated it therefor it isnt as accurate as the previous method of
Qualitative data.

In conclusion, both methods of research is valuable in different

ways as Quantitative research is excellent when it comes to
getting facts and putting them in order using numbers. This can
prove to be good in certain situations when you have too many
people to ask a question too so therefore you tally it down and
place them on a spreadsheet and get data that way.
However, Qualitative data is getting information and ratings
through the use of the publics opinion. This way is more time
consuming and not as accurate but it still works in certain
situations for example film reviews as tally what film they like
would give them a score yet it would provide detail why they
did or didnt like the film.

A fanzine is a web page dedicated to an individual or

individuals that have a large fan base. Carrying on the point a
fanzine page is created by the individuals fans who are
constantly wanting to be up to date with their idol if any more
impressive news has been up roared by the news with articles
ect.

Secondary research:
Secondary research is when you copy data from someone else
who has done primary research.

This is a screenshot of the BAPLA agency. The agency provides

information about a certain subject, yet using this information
to help you with a task that is using similar content is known as
secondary research.

Furthermore, secondary research is using the other way of

research which is known as primary research.
Secondary research is also found in the news industry. From the
screen shot taken from the Daily Mirror has a story about
political dispute. However, the information carrying forward has
been put together by the use of secondary research because
every bit of information has been taken from another persons
view on the same matter and the research or journalists writing
the article about this subject rewrite the information from the
source the journalist took it from.

Advantage of secondary research is more reliable then primary

due to the fact secondary research have sources to back up
their information and data because you are taking data from
someone elses source.
However, this can have a disadvantage because you are taking
information from someone elses work this could lead to you
getting irrelevant information or it could breach the copyright
act as you will be taking quotes etc from that source but you
may not know that the owner of that research has placed a
copyright law.

Primary Research:
Primary research means you individual make your own
statistics over a certain subject and its relevant enough for
other people to use your facts and preform secondary data.

Carrying the point on primary research, examples of primary

research is creating a survey to get your own research without
needing to rely on someone elses information to be accurate.
Also carrying out primary research means that it may help your
information not be biased also it helps you save a great deal of
time instead of looking through someones research that may
not be correct.
Overall primary data is more efficient due to the fact that it
helps with not losing a lot of time and it also means you are not
relying on another individuals work and hoping whether its right
or not as primary research is you going out and providing
yourself with the information needed.
Interviews are one way of primary because in an interview you
are conducting your own information and not taking any
information off another source otherwise you would be
conducting secondary research.
Questionnaires are also involving primary research because
questionnaires consist of two principals and these principals are
the questions that the user is given hasnt been taken from
another source and when the user answers the questions is
made by their own minds none of the information is taken from
someone.
Focus groups are involving primary research due to the fact of
that a focus group take their own ideas and place the idea into
action for either the community or for their own benefit,
therefore this is not secondary research.
Audience panels are based around primary research because
each idea is taken by different individuals due to the fact of
that audience panels are hosted in large rooms filled with high
powered people who call out ideas to better the community.

One advantage of primary research is that you are conducting

the survey or question air or any type of research yourself
instead of using another source. This can be seen as an
advantage due to the fact that if you are doing your own
research you are less likely to intrude into the copyright law,
because you are not taking someone elses work.
A Disadvantage of primary research is that it cannot be
extremely reliable because if you are conducting a survey
people may lie about the answer they give and this can prove
to be difficult later on as then you will have false results and
therefore leading you primary research to be invalid research.

BARB (Broadcasters Audience Research

Board):
BARB is the organisation that complies audience measurements
and television ratings in the UK.

This example is of the BARB website, the website illustrates

what BARB do for the media side of Britain. BARB also has
statistics to demonstrate how their company impacts our
television broadcasting and how their company is important to
the community.

RAJAR (Radio Joint Audience Research Ltd):

RAJA collates statistics on radio listening in the UK. RAJAR are
currently joined owned by the BBC. The RAJAR Company helps
the BBC with the statistics side. RAJAR collect their data in a
seven day period for example when they conduct a survey for
10,000 adults they use a seven day collecting period, therefore
they can collect all the results.

Audience research:
Audience research is a variety of different types of research
combined into one method of research.
One method is audience profiling, the term audience profiling
is used to describe the characteristics of those who listen, read
or view to a given medium. Furthermore audience profiling can
be important to advertisers who want to display their
advertisements.

The screenshot above is an example of the method audience

profiling as it is showing the characteristics of their audience on
the BBC, the screenshot also shows their audience put into
categories as adults and also placed by gender. This symbolises
how the characteristics change with age and gender.
Another method of research is audience measurement and
data. Audience measurement and data is the statistics of the
volume of people listening into the station or viewing a
program.

This screenshot retrieved from the BBC website displaying a

video on how the BBC measures the audience. The video talks
about different types of audience research and how they are
carried out in today modern community.

Demographics:
Demographics means placing the audience through gender,
age, race and other categories.

Evidence backing up the meaning of demographics is the

screenshot above. As the image shows the social grade of A is
upper middle class with a higher managerial, administrative
or professional. Whereas social grade C2 the skilled working
class that are skilled manual workers.

Geodemographic:
Geodemographic refers to a range of methods used for
classifying and characterising neighbourhoods or localities. For
example if an area is known for having a larger amount of
crime Geodemographic will place that place in a classification
for dangerous whereas if another area hasnt got hardly any
crime then it would be placed in a safer classification.

Market research:
Market research is a technique which involves gathering
information of a target markets or customers. Product market is
a method which intakes the customers facing tasks or outbounding markets. Furthermore product marketing deals with
the firms marketing the products prospects. Market research is
an effective way to gather research from the public because it
allows businesses to gather the essential facts to create their
company better for the community and to make customers to
want to go to that company. Market research also allows a
business to compete with competitors if that company has a
wide arisen of rival businesses.

Production research:
Production research to help give information on the
characteristics of a product. When a business adopts the
research method production research it provides the business
of an overview of the commercial viability which is a valuable
business skill to gain a high amount of profit. Production
research also is the research looking upon the welfare of a
person in the project and it is also the statistics of the amount
of resources a project would need for example in making a

movie the production research is looking at how much a certain

actor would cost to play a part in the film and how much it will
cost the business to provide the actor with food, drink and give
the actor the facilities such as a toilet and dressing room.
Furthermore production research provides the statistics of the
amount of money it will cost the company to create the film
and production research also gives the statistics of how much
money it will cost for all the equipment such as cameras and
lighting.

The screenshot above is taken off the BBC website and the
video within the image is of the BBC programme Crime Watch
and it is talking about how the different research roles varies
throughout certain media products as Crime Watch has a
wide range of different crimes. The researcher has a range of
researching methods of reconstructing the crime in a video with
actors replaying the crime taking place. In the studio of Crime
Watch the researchers are set in locations for example the
head researcher is based on the ground floor of the studio and
given the task to put down the criminals photos and their
location and information about that individual.

The image is taken from the BBCs website and this company
also incorporates production research as the video mentions
the key skills that a user would need to succeed in a project by
using production research.
