Skill: Affect vs. Effect

When youre writing, its easy to confuse affect and effect. They might sound similar, but theyre not
the same word!

Affect is a verb.

Examples:

I hope your ankle injury doesnt affect your performance on stage tonight.

Stress affects my mood; it makes me cranky and temperamental!
Effect is usually used as a noun.



Examples:

Riding my bike every day has had a great effect on my overall health.

If we all practiced green habits, the effect on our environment would be huge.
Directions: In the sentences below, decide whether to use affect or effect. Fill in the blanks with the correct
word. Add a suffix if necessary (-ed or -s).
