SACE STAGE 1 CHEMISTRY INVESTIGATION
Conventional fuels such as fossil fuels (petroleum, oil, coal and natural
gas) through extended and heavy use have been scientifically
demonstrated to be extremely detrimental to the environment, largely
through the greenhouse effect which causes a gradual increase in global
temperatures. Though cleaner in some ways that fossil fuels, nuclear
materials have proved to have other major environmental and safety
hazards.
Currently, scientists in many different fields are investigating alternative
fuels which may be able to produce and store energy while having
significantly less of an impact on the environment. You will be
investigating two of these fuels, showing your understanding of both the
chemistry of the fuels as well as the greater social and environmental
impacts of the fuels.
