The rhetor of Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night is Dylan Thomas, he is a boy who
is expressing his grievance towards his dying father. This poem is targeted towards anyone who
may be dealing with the death of someone close to them. The rhetorical situation is a son trying
to cope with how acceptive his father is of his near death in comparison to his feelings towards
death which are disapproving. The message of the poem is to fight on even though death is
coming. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Much like this poem, there are many other forms of literacies that speak of physical
attributes that have a deeper meaning. In Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night, Dylan
Thomas says, And you, my father, there on the sad height which uses the peak of a mountain
as a metaphor to portray the peak of his fathers death. Similarly, in A Sky Full Of Stars by
Coldplay, the lyrics can be seen as a type of literacy landscape. The lyrics compare a sky full of
stars to a female filled with brightness and light.
Although the song uses literacy landscape just like the poem does, the song is not as deep
as the poem because song lyrics tend to be focused more on rhythm and audience appeal rather

than focusing on portraying a deeper meaning. Poems will focus more on creating metaphors to
evoke a more internal meaning whereas song lyrics do not stress on using figurative language as
much as they do on the flow of the words. Another type of literacy is rap, which focuses on
expressing a finer meaning. A rap is more similar to the poem in a sense that the meaning is more
emphasized. At the same time, a rap focuses on the musical tunes which makes it somewhat
similar to a song. Overall, a rap is closely related to a poem because the rapper is, in a way,
speaking to the audience and focusing mostly on getting his or her message through to the
outside world.
A poem offers more insight to create a deeper understanding for the targeted audience. A
prose has a clear cut message and there is not a hidden interpretation that has to be present. A
poem is different in the sense because it offers a better perception for the audience. A poem
allows people to think in an abstract way. This allows the mystery of not knowing the true
meaning of the poem to promote creative thinking. A prose, however, is an optimal choice for
when the literal meaning of a poem needs to be understood.
Since individuals interpret things differently, poetry alters the understanding of literacy
themes. This is shown in individuals who think simplistically. Simplistic thinkers can accidently
take the literal meaning of a poem, when it is intended to have a deeper meaning. The same can
be said for thinkers who over-analyze poems and miss the targeted meaning. This is type of
reasoning can alter the meaning of giant themes.
Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night has an overarching theme of fighting towards
ones death. The speaker uses the repetition of rage in the line, Rage, rage against the dying of
the light, and the light aiming towards ones death. This poem has a whole other meaning, it is

not meant to be taken in a literal way, but meant to be taken in an analytical way. A prose is
meant to be taken straightforward in which it can hinder the mind from thinking creatively.
Songs and raps songs try to follow the rhythm of the words while a poem solely focuses on the
perception of the reader's perception.
