Ruth and Carlos Contreras Scholarship Application
The Ruth and Carlos Contreras Scholarship Fund awards educational financial assistance
to deserving college students of Latin American descent who demonstrate a thirst for
knowledge, a dedication to completing their education, a willingness to encourage other
Latin American students to continue to pursue higher education, and a financial need to
complete their studies.
Carlos Contreras was born on August 12, 1926 in Houston, Texas. Drafted immediately
after graduating from Sam Houston High School at the age of 18, Contreras was sent to
Germany to serve in World War II. He achieved the rank of staff sergeant and was
honorably discharged in 1946. He married Ruth Eguia in 1949 and attended the
University of Houston on the GI Bill. Carlos graduated with a BS in Mechanical
Engineering in 1955 while supporting a family of 8. Ruth was born in Houston on
February 12, 1926. She was a dedicated homemaker and advocate of education, civil
rights for women and Latinos. Ruth was gifted in the arts and was a constant inspiration
to her children to succeed in wherever their passions lead them. Both Ruth and Carlos
always stressed the significance of secondary education to their sons, daughters and
grandchildren, Carlos reminded his family of his favorite quote "a journey of thousand
miles begins with the first step".
This scholarship is awarded to college students only.

spring semester of 2016. The scholarship in the amount of $500 will be distributed in
December 2015.
