Understanding the child

Student name: ___Fiona Young________________________________________

Date 16/08/2012

Strengths in Literacy: Fiona would be classified as highly able in literacy. Fionas VELS level for reading in semester 1 &2, 2010 is assessed
to be 3.00, which in semester 1, was well above average for a student of her age. She loves to read, reads confidently and often. She is able
to think beyond the meanings of the words. She is able to imagine ideas about how a characters voice might sound and infer the emotions
people can feel when reading something.
Fiona does extremely well in writing. Her VELS levels for Writing was assessed to be 3.25 in semester 1, 2010 and 3.75 in semester 2, 2010.
This shows that Fiona is excelling at writing and has progressed past a student of her year level. Furthermore she is still developing her writing
skills and improving. Anna Jones is noted saying she has very good creative writing skills that often take her out of her comfort zone. She
writes with expression and lots of description.
Fionas spelling skills have been steadily improving. She was assessed in her 2010 VELS levels for spelling which in semester 1 was 2.75 and
in semester 2 was 3.50. This is evident in her Anna Jones response to Mrs Young where she states Fiona uses Conventional spelling and
punctuation in her stories.
Interests: Fiona is highly engaged in reading. The majority of the book she reads is in the fantasy genre and she struggles to find other genres
engaging. Her favourite books include the Harry Potter series; she admires the character Hermione Granger because she is smart and not
afraid to be smart. This statement is something which Fiona can relate to. Fiona has also become involved in the Gifted Learners Association
and will be competing in the junior Maths competition in Victoria. She prefers to spend time with her friends in grade 6 or in the library as she
struggles to form relationships with students her own age. Anna Jones believes this is because she cant find similarities with students her own
age. She doesnt have many preferences when it comes to television however she watches the news at home if she isnt reading. She also
enjoys physical education, being one of the fastest runners in the school.
Literacy Preferences: Fiona has a definite preference towards fantasy novels, such as Deltor Quest series, Dragonkeeper and Harry Potter.
Fiona has been noted saying that reading independently is one of her favourite things to do. Furthermore her writing reflects this preference as
she mainly does narrative writing. Conversely, Fiona is not confident with public speaking. She struggles to use expression when she is talking.
She has been noted saying that the worst part of school is having to talk in front of the class is the worst.

Child as Literacy Learner: Fiona is a Highly Able literacy learner. She excels in every part of literacy, except for public speaking. This is
mainly due to her timid nature and her fear of being the centre of attention. Furthermore with students picking on her due to her ability she does
not feel supported in the classroom. She enjoys working independently mostly, although she has been noted to assert herself in small groups
and can show leadership in group tasks. She tries very hard at school and often does extra work at home. As Latham et al. (2006) suggests,
Fiona lacks confidence when it comes to technology and prefers not to use a computer in literacy.
When writing she often pushes herself outside her comfort zone and can express abstract ideas in her writing. Conversely, Fiona sticks to the
fantasy genre and often reads books many times over. She struggles to read outside of this genre. She has an excellent grasp on emotive
language and understands how to infer meaning.
Relationships with others in the school/centre: Fiona is quite shy in the classroom. She finds it hard to relate to other students. Some of her
classmates even tease her about her efforts in class and as a result Fiona is deliberately isolating herself in the classroom. However she does
have friends in the year above. She spends most lunch times either by herself in the library or with a group of year 6 girls. Her parents have
expressed their concern to Anna about her social issues. Fiona, I believe, struggles to find common ground with other students her age and as
a result it is preventing her from forming relationships within the classroom
Physical environment: Fiona does not always feel comfortable in the classroom environment. She does not seem to get along with her
classmates and is sometimes teased by them for her academic ability. Furthermore she prefers to work independently however this may be a
result from her social issues. She tends to isolate herself from other students when working. Consequently, this makes it hard for Anna Jones to
include her in collaborative group work which is heavily used within the curriculum. Conversely, she does assert herself within small groups and
is able to show leadership however does prefer to work alone.

The curriculum: The areas of the curriculum Fiona excels at the most is mathematics, literacy and physical education. Fionas engagement in
mathematics is shown in her eagerness to compete in the Victorian Junior Math Competition and her ability to finish maths problems before
anyone else in the class. She also loves to read and write, which means she excels in literacy. She is also noted to be a very fast runner.
