MATHMATICS LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE 5 SECONDARY

Year Level: 9

Date: N/A

Time: N/A

Period/Lesson: N/A

Topic: How to Measure Rates

Length: 45mins

What do the learners already know, do and value?

-

Students should be able to work out basic algebraic problems

Students should be familiar with adjusting equations to solve for x
Students should know to graph coordinates
Curriculum Outcomes and Essential Learnings:

Curriculum Outcomes & Understandings (According to ACARA)

Explore the relationship between graphs and equations corresponding to simple rate problems(ACMNA208)

Lesson Outcomes:
Cognitive: Students will know how to work out rates per minute equations from word problems and incorporate the
data on an excel spread sheet.
Demonstrative: Students will be able to show the different equations to work our various rate problems
Assessment of the outcomes:
At the end of the lesson students will need to complete a worksheet with several word equations and must work out the
solutions. Upon accomplishing that they are to graph the results.
Key Language: (words the Ss will need to understand/remember so that they can talk about the topic )
-

Rate

Variables

Constant Variable

Direct Proportion

Safety and Risk assessment: (prac lessons)

Ensure that Students are appropriately seated within their chairs and that desks are far enough apart.
Anticipatory Set: (How do I settle students/ prepare them for lesson/ encourage participation/ motivate?)
Provide students with the necessary time to settle down and get to their seats. If the beginning of the lesson seems
flexible students will be less likely to fight against the structure.
Allow at designated points of lesson for students to talk amongst themselves. Giving them a sense of sharing their own
opinion builds self-esteem, character and also may provide silence when silence is necessary.
Provide team work as a motivation throughout the lesson. Students tend to be more motivated when they are aware that
they are not alone. They also may participate more in a smaller group than large class room.
Have as much one to one interaction with all students but specifically those that seem out of touch socially or more
reserved. Even if it is a pat on the back or encouraging word, it might mean the world to them.

Lesson

will begin with

the teacher dividing
students into groups
of three giving each
group a heart rate
monitor.

The Teacher will

provide the students
with 5 minutes for
this activity. ( a timer
app will be used on
students computers)
After the activity is
over the teacher will
then show students
how to incorporate
their results into a
excel spread sheet.

Students will be in
groups of three and

heart rate will be
measured while either
sitting, standing,
walking or jogging in
place for 20 seconds,
who will record the data
and who will alternate as
being monitored.

After a minute the

students will switch with
the other and the results
will be recorded on
paper.

Students will type

results into an excel
spread sheet

Upon completion of
initial activity teacher
will ask a few
individual groups their
heart rate outcome.
A question that the
teacher will ask the
students is:
What would the
individuals heart rate
be per minuet?
What would it be after
10 minutes?
