The Childrens League

Reflection of Activity

I briefly presented the digital handbook to the staff at our Fall Orientation
meeting. I showed how I made the links in the document and discussed
the need to make a copy for each classroom for aide staff to look it over.
This document needs to remain an open, active document as forms need
to be revised and information changed.
I inventoried the Handwriting Without Tears materials. I had brief
discussions with teachers and one therapist about the need to meet to help
each other plan activities and understand all the program can do to help
children not only learn to write but to recognize letters and numbers, and
understand body parts and positions.
I completed the last part of the second intake. I went to the CPSE meeting
where the evaluations were shared with the parent and plans were made
for the childs IEP. We were hoping to fill a suddenly vacant Head Start
integrated slot but the mother chose a different program. There is no
guarantee that since a child was evaluated at our site that they will pick
our program if a special class is warranted.
I met with a teacher to review the IEPs she wrote. She was very concise
and professional in her delivery of information about a child. My thought
as an administrator is to share the positive comments quickly and not wait
until the end of the year. There was a concern though that another child
had the exact same comments for the academic area. Once I found out
about the problem I discussed my findings with an administrator and took
some time to figure out the best way to handle the situation. I started with
the positive comments about her reports. She appreciated that as the
administrators had not commented on her reports. I said I had a concern
that as I read another report they were exactly the same in the academic
area. It would be something she would need to watch carefully moving
forward as the IEPs need to be individualized even if the children present
in that area with the same skills.

Implement the vision

I had the Handbook copied to share with each classrooms aide staff. I
asked for comments, positive or negative, and additions to the information
I found. As I passed out the handbook to the teachers, one teacher
commented on how much she appreciated it. She also asked about a
certain attendance form. She found it and forwarded it to me and I added
the form to the appendix and the link from the main document to the
appendix.
There was an issue with a parent and the bus driver and aide for a child.
The parent was upset and decided to drive the child to school until the bus
company could figure out a solution. I sat with the director and our
transportation person. The difficulty is that we are not in control of bus
company and the hiring of drivers and aides. The drivers are part of a
union. The bus company offered to place and personal aide on the bus for
the child. The director and I planned to meet with the driver and aide
tomorrow to share information about the child and possible strategies for
the child while she rides the bus.
We met with the bus driver and aide and shared some strategies with
them. They shared a different version of the interaction with the father.
As an administrator I need to be open to all sides of a situation and find a
solution and not get emotionally involved. It would have been one
thought that since a parent was upset to have the driver and aide switched
out but that would have been reactive. There would be no drivers or aides
left to take care of the children. There needs to be solutions and dialogue
with both parties.
I finished the alignment of the HELP 3-6 with the NYS CCLS main
section. Looking over Domain 5, the Science, Social Studies, Arts and
Technology sections would not be covered thoroughly in the HELP.
There may be sections that overlap.
I began creating a document to share the information regarding the HELP.

goals. Another planning day is planned for October 8 for teams to get
together to organize tracking forms for goals for children. Half of the aide
staff were scheduled for Crisis Prevention Institute training. This is a
better schedule than how it was completed in the past. The other half of
the aide staff will be trained on October 8.
Chris and I reviewed the lockdown procedures to be presented to the staff 3 hours
at a meeting tomorrow.
Chris and I reviewed the plan for the October 8 staff meeting regarding
2 hours
goals writing. This is a continuation of the September 24 meeting. I
wrote up an agenda to share with the staff. It will be emailed to them
prior to the October 8 inservice day.
I continued to add information to the document for the alignment of the
HELP to the NYS CCLS.
