Body is an essay about the personas perception of her body and the
factors that influenced and changed her perception. The essay is divided
into several sections dedicated to her body parts, flaws and the said factors.
In her introduction, she recounts how she lost her innocence regarding
standards of beauty and also briefly mentions the environment that she
grew up in. As a child, she was not aware of the standards of beauty
imposed on women. She recalls that she would not have disliked the bumps
on her arm if her mother did not insist that she try to get rid of them. Here,
it is revealed that one of the first people to impose beauty standards on her
was her mother, and that it was worsened by the school she attended.
The next few paragraphs are dedicated to the aspects taking care of a
garden. Her description meticulously elaborates on how plants should be
kept clean. She also mentions pests, pesticides and how there is a conflict of
interest regarding the use of the latter. We see her loosely comparing the
body to a garden and its plants. With this line of thought, we see that the
body must be kept clean regularly, and that we must protect it from harm
but not with something toxic.
