Treaty of Olmutz

Also known as the Seven Weeks' War. This war was


between Austria and Prussia, with Italy helping Prussia. It
was over control of the German Confederation. Prussia
won, and created the North German Confederation, of
which Austria was not a part, and Italy received Venetia.

Otto von Bismarck

The peace settlement at the end of the Seven Weeks war.


Italy was given Venetia and Austria was permanently
separated from Germany.

Austro-Prussian war

Chancellor of Prussia from 1862 until 1871, when he


became chancellor of Germany. A conservative nationalist,

he led Prussia to victory against Austria (1866) and France


(1870) and was responsible for the creation of the German
Empire.

The Peace of Prague

This treaty in 1850 restored the Bund under Austrian


leadership and dissolved the Erfurt Union.

Franco-Prussian war

The King of Prussia (2 January 1861-9 March 1888) and


the first German Emperor (18 January 1871-9 March
1888), as well as the first Head of State of a united
Germany.

Treaty of Frankfurt

Kaiser Wilhelm I

A conflict between the Second French Empire and the


Kingdom of Prussia. The complete Prussian and German
victory brought about the final unification of Germany
under King Wilhelm I of Prussia.
This treaty ended the Franco-Prussian War. By this treaty,
France ceded to Germany the provinces of Alsace and
Lorraine (rich in coal and iron and inhabited by many
French people), agreed to pay Germany a huge war
indemnity and consented to military occupation until the
indemnity was paid.

Kaiser Wilhelm II

300+ German states became 39 in 1815. Strong enough to


defend itself, but too weak to be a threat.

Confederation

Became ruler of Germany in 1888 and dramatically


changed Germany's foreign policy. He wanted to show the
world how mighty Germany had become and did not want
to share his power with anyone. He let Germany's treaty
with Russia lapse in 1890, which allowed Russia to form a
defensive military alliance with France. Next, Wilhelm
began a shipbuilding program in order to make the
German navy equal to the British fleet. This led Britain to
form an alliance with France.
