HANDBOOK

Introduction
This handbook attempts to illustrate typical circuit
arrangements for DOL, Star-Delta and other
combinations of motor starters using L&T contactors,
overload relays, timers, push buttons, rotary switches and
other accessories.
These circuits can be used as guidelines when planning
switchboards or control panels. They can also be utilised
for maintenance of standard L&T starters.

SECTION I
General
To provide motors with accurate and reliable protection, it is
essential to keep the following points in mind :
1) Relay setting
The overload relay unit is the protection center of the motor
starter. Relays come in a number of ranges. Selection of a relay for
a starter depends upon motor hp and duty.
A selection table indicating the proper range for different ratings
is given in section VI. For all direct-on-line starters, relays should
be set to the actual load current of the motor. This value should be
equal to or lower than the full load current indicated on the motor
name plate. Here is a simple procedure for setting the relay to the
actual load current:
Set the relay to about 80% of full load current. If it trips, increase
the setting to 85% or more. The relay should never be set at more
than the actual current drawn by the motor (The actual current
drawn by a motor will be less than the full load current in most of
the cases, as motors may not be loaded to capacity.)
The relay operates on the phase currents in Star-Delta starters.
It should, therefore, be set at 0.6 times actual load current. A
procedure similar to the one described for setting relays in DOL
starters can be followed for Star-Delta starters.
2) Tripping of starters
A starter may trip due to the following conditions;
a) Low voltage or failure of power supply
b) Persistent overload on the motor
In the first instance, the tripping occurs through the coil which
opens the contacts when voltage falls below a certain level.
The starter can be restarted as soon as supply is back to
normal. The relay trips the starter when there is an overload. It
can be restarted only after the relay is reset. However, the
cause of overload must be investigated before restarting, or
else the starter will trip again. Persistent overloading can
reduce the life of the motor.

When contactor "B is welded, relay is permanently by passed and the motor
is not protected. To overcome this, another timerT2 is introduced as shown in
the figure the time delay of timer T2 is to be kept greater than time delay of
timer T1.when contactor "B" is welded, NC contact of timer T2 will disconnect
coil A. Thus the motor is switched off.

Contact replacement
107
108
Insert the stranded cable in the proper size cable lug and pour
l
solder through the cable lug. Ensure that solder fills the entire
space inside the cable lug socket.
l
Wipe off excess solder on cable insulation.
l
Connect the cable lug to the terminal and tighten terminal screws
using spring washers on the cable lug.
l
There should not be excess load on the cable lug, or else the
solder will becomes loose. Care must, therefore, be taken to
cut the cable core and strip the insulation to the correct length.
The cable lug should sit flat on the terminal and the cable should
not have sharp bends.
Every two or three months it is necessary to check whether
the connection is firm and to tighten the screws, if necessary.
Also check and ensure that the cable is not loose in the cable
lug.
For "crimping" type cable lugs:
Check that cable lug socket is clean and dry inside.
l
Clean every strand of aluminum wire with a small hard wire
brush after opening strands.
l
Close the strand again immediately, insert to the proper length
inside the cable lug socket and crimp, using the correct crimping
tool.
l
Connect the cable lugs to the terminal and tighten terminal
screws using spring washers on the cable lug.
Contact maintenance
Contact tips are made of silver compositions like silver nickel and silver
cadmium oxide. In normal use, these tips may show slight brown or
black tarnish. If the atmosphere around the starter contains high
moisture and sulphur, the contact tips will show excessive tarnishing.
To clean the contact tips, use this maintenance procedure:
