calledRudraSampradaya.HeidentifiedBrahmanwith
SriKrishna,characterisedbySat(Being),Cit
(consciousness)andAnanda(bliss).Accordingtohim,
salvationisthroughSneha(deeprootedloveforGod).
Hewastheauthorofanumberofscholarlyworksin
SanskritandBrajbhasa,theimportantbeingSubodhini
andSiddhantRahasya.
5.Ramananda(Fifteenthcentury):
BornatPrayag,hewasthefirstgreatBhaktisaintof
NorthIndia.HeopenedthedoorofBhaktitoall
withoutanydistinctionofbirth,caste,creedorsex.He
wasaworshipperofRamaandbelievedintwogreat
principles,namelyasperfectloveforgodandhuman
brotherhood.
Hisdisciplesincluded:

(b)Raidasa,acobbler
(c)Sena,abarber
(d)DhannaaJatpeasant

5.Namadeva:
Namadeva,whoflourishedinthefirstpartofthe
jfourteenthcentury,wasatailorwhohadtakento
banditrybeforehebecameasaint.
HispoetrywhichwaswritteninMarathibreathesa
spiritofintenseloveanddevotiontoGod.Namadevais
saidtohavetravelledfarandwideandengagedin
discussionswiththeSufisaintsinDelhi.
7.Chaitanya(14851534):
ChaitanyawasthegreatestsaintoftheBhakti
movement.BornatNavadwipinBengal,hisoriginal
namewasVishwambharMishra.Hewasresponsiblefor
thepopularityofVaishnavisminBengalthroughhis
Kirtans.HebegantheAchintayabhedabhedavada
Schooloftheology.Hepreachedthereligionofintense
faithinoneSupremeBeingwhomhecalledKrishnaor
Hari.
HeadoredKrishnaandRadhaandattemptedto
spiritualisetheirlivesinVrindavan.Hesettled
permanentlyatPuriwherehedied.Afterhisdeath,his
followerssystematisedhisteachingsandorganised
themselvesintoasectcalledGaudiyaVaishanavism.
KrishnadasaKavirajawrotehisbiography,
Chaitanyacharitamrita.
8.Mirabai(14981546):

AgreatsaintoftheBhaktimovement,shewastheonly
childofRatnasinghRathorofMerta.Shewasmarried
toRanaSangaseldestsonandheirapparentBhojaraj
in1516.Shewashighlyreligiousfromherchildhood
andafolloweroftheKrishnacultofVaishanavism.
Afterthedeathofherhusband,shedevotedherself
completelytooreligiouspursuits.Mirabaiissaidto
havecomposednumerousdevotionalsongs.
9.Tulsidas(15321623):
HewasagreatpoetandadevoteeofRama.He
composedthefamous.RamcharitamanasinHindi,
expoundingthevariousaspectsofHindudharma.His
othercreationsareVinayaPatrikaandKavitavali.
10.Surdas(14791584):
Asasaintandapoet,hepreachedthereligionoflove
anddevotiontoapersonalGod.Surdaswasadevotee
ofLordKrishnaandRadha.HemadeuseofBrajbhasa
inhisworkswhichincludeSursagar,SahityaRatnaand
SurSarawali.
11.ShankarDev:
OtherwellknownSagunabhaktisaintswereSankardev
whopopularisedVaishanavabhaktiinAssam.
12.Narasi:
TheoriginalnameofNarasiwasNarasimhaMehta.He
popularisedVaishnavacultinGujarat.
13.Kabir:
BornnearBenaras,heledthelifeofanormal
householder.AdiscipleofRamananda,hismissionwas
topreachareligionoflovewhichwoulduniteallcastes
andcreeds.Heemphasisedtheunityofgodwhomhe

callsbyseveralnames,suchasRama,Hari,Allah,etc.
HestronglydenouncedHinduandMuslimrituals.
Hestronglydenouncedthecastesystem,especiallythe
practiceofuntouchability.However,hewasnotasocial
reformer,hisemphasisbeingreformoftheindividual
undertheguidanceofatrueguru.
Hisdohasandsakhi(poems)arefoundintheBijak.
AfterKabirsdeath,hisMuslimdisciplesorganised
themselvesinMaghar,andtheHindudiscipleswere
organisedintoanorderbySuratGopala,withtheir
centreatBanaras.
14.OtherNirgunasaintswereDaduDayal,who
foundedtheBrahmaSampradayaorParabrahma
Sampradaya,MalukdasaafollowerofKabir,
SundardasaandDharanidasa.
15.ThebhaktisaintsofMaharashtrawerethe
proponentsofMaharashtraDharma.Jnandeva
Namadeva,Eknatha,TukaramandRamdasweresome
ofthegreatBhaktisaintsinMaharashtra.
