ME212 Engineering Graphics

Fall 2014 Project Description
Important Information

The project is worth 1000 points.

Your report is due at THE END OF YOUR CLASS ON YOUR DAY 27 (December 3/4), and will not be accepted prior to
that. Your report will be considered late if not turned in by the end of that period. Late reports will only be
accepted between 11:20 AM and 11:30 AM on Friday, December 5, in our regular classroom and will incur a
200 point penalty. No projects will be accepted thereafter.
Pay particular attention to the following (further details on each item are provided herein):
The report must be professionally spiral bound. This can be done at the Union print shop.
Part/Assembly drawings must appear in your report in the order specified
with page numbers on all pages. A labeled CD and/or Flash Drive must be
included as part of the report (Flash Drives will not be returned!)

Project Report

Utilizing information available to you on K-State Online, create parts, assemblies, and drawings of a Jet Ski Engine in
SolidWorks and assemble a bound report.
For the following parts, you must create a Solidworks model from the provided drawings:
Bottom Engine Block
Front Cross Shaft Seal
Head
Left Piston Cylinder*
Middle Cross Shaft
Right Piston Cylinder
Rod Counter Weight

Rotary Valve**
Rotary Valve Gear
Rotary Valve Seal
Rotary Valve Worm
Gear
Top Engine Block
Front Cross Shaft Seal
Page 4

For The following parts, you must create a Solidworks drawing for the provided part using best-practice
dimensioning standards:
Connecting Rod
Counterweight Shaft
Cross Shaft Worm Gear
Flywheel
Front Cross Shaft
Inner Bearing
Outer Bearing

Piston
Piston Ring
Rear Cross Shaft
Rotary Valve**
Rotary Valve
Ring
Rotary Valve
Shaft
Upper Rod
Bushing

Additional Information:

*You are required to provide a part AND a drawing for the Left Piston Cylinder. The drawing only needs
one view with dimensions indicating the one feature that is not the same as on the Left Piston Cylinder.
SEE EXAMPLE
**You have been provided with a Bad Drawing for the Rotary Valve as part of the Day 19 Application
Exercise. You must supply the completed part AND corrected drawing for the Rotary Valve in the
project. 3D PDFs are provided for the assemblies and some of the parts. Look in the project folder
for instructions on how to use the 3D PDFs.

The report must be bound in exactly the following order:

1.

Grade Sheet (This will be provided to you one week before the project is due)

Include a printout of this Project Description document and a short paragraph describing the project,
the design process, and/or constructive criticism of the project.

Full Assembly Drawing

This drawing should contain the following:

A complete bill of materials (using top level only BOM Type) with the columns shown below

Balloons for each part/sub-assembly in your BOM

6. Assembly and Part Drawings (use project drawing templates on K-State Online).
First drawing sheet:

Isometric drawing of each particular part /assembly

Shaded with edges

Properly scaled to fit page

Subsequent part sheets (as needed/required):

For parts: o dimensioned drawings of each part using any/all types of views as necessary
o If a PDF drawing was provided or downloaded from McMaster, you may use that PDF
as your drawing but you are welcome to recreate any drawings that were provided
to you.
For assemblies: an exploded view of the assembly with balloons and top level Bill of Materials
with the column shown below

Item No.

Qty.

NOTES:

Group the pages for each part in the order specified in above (isometric, orthographic, etc.) and then put
these sets of drawings in the exact order specified in the Table of Contents. Drawings out of order will
NOT be graded.
Page 7

7.

Project should be printed single-sided.

One fastener and one spring will be needed to be downloaded from www.mcmaster.com. The part
number is provided above.
For the HEAD part, you are required to customize the top face with an engraving (or something similar).
Up to 25 extra credit points will be given to any outstandingly creative customizations. The
better/cooler/more interesting it is, the more extra credit you will get. Get creative and have some fun
with it!
Any part of the engine may be aesthetically customized as long as it does not impede the mechanical
function of the engine.

Compact Disc/Flash Drive

Include all of your electronic files (parts, assemblies, and drawings) for the project
Write your name, ME212 Project, your section, and Fall 2014 directly onto the CD and/or Flash Drive
All files must open correctly and be properly linked, or it will result in zero points awarded for the
particular part.
Rules, Guidelines, and Notes
ALL WORK (templates, keystrokes, mouse clicks, etc.) MUST BE YOUR OWN unless otherwise specifically allowed

On isometric views, do not show hidden lines or centerlines. On orthographic views, show hidden lines,
centerlines, and center marks when appropriate
(only omit when there are too many lines to properly see the parts features and note omissions when you
make them).

Scale your printouts to fit on 8 x 11 sheets (Landscape).

Your drawings should be neat and organized with all text capitalized (except part names).
No sketches, planes, axes, or origins should be shown.
Your report is to have a clear cover and a spiral binding along the top (long) edge. This can be done at the
Union Copy Center or similar businesses.
Your CD and/or Flash Drive is to be placed in a commercial sleeve or pocket at the back of your report (also
available at the Union Copy Center).
All units are in millimeters. Double check before you begin each part; it will save you time.
Remember, these drawings should be considered professional quality and will graded with that level of scrutiny.
