Voices Treatment

The radio drama I will be producing will be titled Voices, and will be
a kitchen sink sci-fi drama. The story will chronicle a journalist who
was sent out to report on a war in space, and has returned to work
back on his home planet. Due to the events of the war, he now
suffers from PTSD. I will be blending the elements of a kitchen sink
drama by setting most of the radio drama in an office, however the
flashbacks will bring a sci-fi element to it so that I can intrigue the
target audience. I believe the blend of these two genres together
will make it a unique piece, capturing the audience on a dramatic
scale whilst also engaging them with the sci-fi.
My drama will be a single play, with no continuity in it. Im doing this
because I think that itll be different and unique to every other radio
drama. Most Sci-fis are series, so to make it a standalone will stand
out from the rest of them. I will open the story and close it within the
play, which makes it fit into the single play format.
The narrative will be a linear narrative with flashbacks in it. It will be
set generally in one environment, however the flashbacks will be
used, as they are pivotal in telling the story. The primary conflict
that will be faced in the story will be about how the main character
is dealing with going back to work after seeing his best friend shot.
Naturally this would leave anyone down on his or her luck and
tragically upset, and in this case it has left him with PTSD. The plot
opens up with a flashback to the main character reporting at the
beginning and subsequently followed by a loud bang. It then goes
back to the present, where we see our main character go back to
work. He has all of his colleagues approach him and attempt to
comfort him, however this only worsens the situation. As he tries to
work he has many different flashbacks. This element of it adds to
the kitchen sink drama part of the genre as it is all in one place,
however I will add the sci-fi element to it with the flashbacks. My
drama will be aired in the evening, after watershed time. This is
because my main target audience is men aged between 16-34, so
after watershed means it can be explicit whilst also meaning they
are still awake at that time. I will have to use certain sounds to
please my target audience. As Im doing a sci-fi piece the audience
will not be expecting to hear classical music, as it will not be
appropriate for the sounds commonly heard in a sci-fi. Ive also
purposefully set the flashbacks to be in an intergalatical war so I can
meet the expectations. I am trying to make it unique by making it a
kitchen sink drama. However this would not please the target
audience if it was only like this, so I have set the flashbacks to have
a sci-fi element to make it appropriate.
My main character will be named Han (dubbed after Han Solo). Han
was born to the average middle class family of the future. His father

was a general in the military and his mother worked in

administration at his school, on the Moon. His father was a big
inspiration to him, and due to him being so inspired by his fathers
stories, he knew from a young age he wanted to be able to report
those stories just like his father. He went through school like every
Average Joe, and went to the University of Mars to study
Extraterrestrial Journalism. Here was where he met his best friend
and work partner Lee. Lee was at the same university and was
studying cinematography in television. Both of them shared a
passion of journalism, which helped to bond a friendship between
the two. After both completing their degrees, they moved in as flat
mates and both got separate jobs. Han got a job as a runner for an
international television network. This would help him to open up into
the world of journalism. As time progressed, he was recognized
more and more by people higher up in the journalism industry. He
worked his way up and managed to get a job as a web journalist. In
the meantime he managed to also secure Lee a job as a cameraman
in the studio. Eventually he got a promotion to field journalism. Here
was when him and Lee became professional partners, as they
required each other. They went on many different adventures as
they worked together, reporting on many different intergalatical
stories. Eventually they were both sent out to report on the
intergalatical war and this was where Lee was shot while on the job.
Han is 5ft11 with short, thin sandy hair. He has a very defined jaw,
with blue eyes. He is usually seen wearing a suit, with a checkered
tie, however his suits never usually fit him, as theyre often too
small.
Lee is the late best friend and work partner of Han. Han was born to
a lower class family, however from a young age he often expressed
his desire to film and report. He went through most of his youth
making short films with his childhood camera, the XTI 505. This
camera would become a very important part of his life, as it was
where his passion all started. As he went to school he was a
member of the film club and the journalists club. Through his hard
work and effort he managed to earn a scholarship into the
University of Mars on Extraterrestrial Cinematography. While he was
at university, he met Han. Lee felt like he found someone he could
completely relate to when he met Han due to the both of them
sharing the same passion. He would go on to share an apartment
with Han. While Han got a job at an international television
network, Lee did not secure a job as quickly. He got a job in retail in
the biggest shop in the Universe, the Moon. However this was only a
temporary solution. As Han was building up the ranks in his
workplace, he managed to secure Lee a job as a cameraman. This
lead them to becoming official business partners, as they both
required each other to do their jobs. Throughout there many
adventures in space, Lee always kept hold of his camera as it held

to heart to him. It was during a report on the field during the

intergalatical war that he was shot dead.
Lee is 6ft2 with thick, black hair. Hes very well built and has been
from a young age. Often his outfit will consist of jeans and a plain tshirt.
My radio drama will be only a 5-minute drama, but this will mean I
will have to hire it out for an hour. The costs of an average
newcomer would cost about 7,000 for a script fee. My radio actors
would cost typically about 228 per episode for a radio drama. I will
need radio equipment to record it, which I could find for 1,500. I
will also need 10 actors, 2 main characters and 8 support
characters. This would cost 2,280 for all of them. This would bring
the total cost up to 10,780.

I believe that my radio drama will be a unique and entertaining

radio drama like no other has been seen before, which is why I think
it should be chosen to be produced. It is cost efficient and will
provide its target audience with a unique twist to what has been
seen and expected from other radio dramas. The blending of genre
elements will also make it a reason to be produced, as it is
experimental and I think that it might be an innovation in radio
dramas, which would hopefully inspire others to make radio dramas
like this.
