What is the activity coefficient?

The ratio of chemical activity to actual

concentration : an arbitrary quantity that in the case
of solutions is a measure of the deviation of a more or
less concentrated solution from an ideal solution
-Encyclopdia Britannica

What is the document about?

Wilson model for polymer aqueous

solutions.

It describes the activity

coefficients and solubility of
amino acids and peptides.

Introduction of a temperature
dependence on the energy
parameters.

Better results than UNIFAC and

UNIQUAC models.

It can also calculate solubility of a

mixture of two amino acids.

Considerations

The term that accounts for the size/

shape contribution is negligible
because the molecules of amino acids
and peptides are very small.

All the amino acids in pure water are

in zwitterionic form without any other
chemical and physical interactions.

More than 99% of the amino acids

molecules stay in the zwitterionic form
in the absence of a strong proton donor
or proton acceptor.

But what is a zwitterionic compound?

Neutral compounds having formal unit

electrical charges of opposite sign.

Solubility of Two Amino Acids Mixtures

Solubility of Two Amino Acids Mixtures

For calculating the solubility of a mixture of two amino
acids in water we directly use data from tables.
The binary interaction parameters between two amino
acids are treated as adjustable parameters.
Two systems that are investigated:
1) water + DL-alanine + DL-valine
2) water + DL-alanine + DL-serine

Conclusions

The model represent accurately the activity coefficients

of amino acids and peptides.

The introduction of the temperature dependence on the

energy parameters was useful to predict the solubility of
amino acids with better results.

It can indeed calculate the solubility of a mixture of two

amino acids in aqueous solution

It in fact agrees with preciously reported data.
