Lesson Plan

Day: _Tuesday_
Date: _1st September 2015_
Time: 9.30 9.50 am_
Class: _Year three
Subject: Health and Physical Education Topic: _FMS - Underhand Throw
_____________________________________
Students Prior Knowledge and Experience: Students have been exposed to basic FMS in
pre-primary, year one and year two by participating in HPE games and activities. Students
have experience of the Teachers lesson structure and are aware of the safety rules and
listening rules. Students know to return to the magic spot where more instructions are given
and the next game is explained. The magic spot is an area, determined by a different student
each week, to get the students to listen to the Teachers instructions and to transition to the
next activity. The magical proponent of the spot is that the quicker every student gets there
and listens the more time there will be to have fun doing the next activity.
Note* Some students new to the country may not have had exposure to ball skills. These
students and students with special needs may require additional demonstrating and practising
time. Additional demonstration video http://portal.atmybest.ca/en/video/throw-catchunderhand-toss

Learning Objective: At the end of this

session the students should understand
and execute the correct sequence
necessary to performing the underhand
throw. This will be through demonstration
of correct underhand throwing sequence
and active play. ACPMP 044

Student Evaluation:
Students will be observed and recorded on the
assessment sheet (see attached) and digitally
recorded on the IPad.
Students underhand throw will be assessed on
correct stance, eyes on target, ball held in front
of body, stepping forward with opposite leg to
throwing arm, well timed release of ball and
follow through with straight arm. See Rubric for
assessing underhand throw.
Preparation and Resources: (Learning objects required)
Equipment Required: Whistle, IPad, Music, Demonstration video, 30 x cones, 15 x beanbags,
6 x buckets, 4 x large balls, 4 x small balls, 4 x quoits, assessment sheets and timer.
Teacher will require a whistle, an iPad, music and demonstration video preloaded on the IPad.
Set up for activity by placing Two wishing wells on a line and Place a Various hand sized balls/
beanbags at each throwing position (about 3m away from wells).
Prepare the physical education area for the musical/whistle throws by selecting a physical
line (eg. a line on a court or oval, a low beam, rope or seating etc.) Have 20 items for
throwing (8 x bean bags, 4 x large balls, 4 x quoits and 4 x small balls) divided evenly in two
piles on either side of the barrier.

Sampl only

Timing:
9.30am
1 mins

Learning Experiences:

2 min

Demonstrate the underhand throw by showing the following YouTube video (on the
IPad) http://sport.wales/community-sport/education/play-to-learn/learnskills/practice.aspx?c=5801&w=5565&a=5776 pause the video to show: facing
your target, then step with your opposite foot towards the target (i.e. if throwing
with right hand, step towards target with your left foot), use a pendulum arm
motion with the throwing arm (i.e. like you are bowling) and swing the arm
through, releasing the ball and allowing the palm of the hand to continue through.
Demonstrate the skill physically.
Verbal cues: Look, step, opposite foot forward, swing and follow through.

5 mins

Main body of lesson: Divide the students in two groups by allocating numbers 1
to 2 to each student. Students to line up behind allocated Wishing wells (buckets)
(i.e. 1 to 2). Wishing well activity to be explained as follows: Each student has to
stand at a wishing well (bucket) and take in turns underhand throwing to the
corresponding wishing well. Each team keeps track of how many wishes it gets (i.e.
how many times they get the ball in the well.). Once the student has had their turn
the student goes to the back of their line. Each team keeps going until the Teacher
blows the whistle.
The Teacher uses this time to assess each student for achieving learning objective
by filling out attached assessment form and taking photographs/video on the IPad.

2 mins

Warm down (magic time): Explain the following rules to the Musical throws
game. Explain the game. Students are allocated a side Groups 1 on one side and
groups 2 on the other. Each team has to underhand throw the items (i.e. Balls,
quoits and beanbags) from their side to the other side. The team with the least
amount of items left on their side is the winner.
Play the music/whistle game.

Introduction: Ask the students what they know about the Underhand throw and
discuss why it is important to learn the skill and where it can be used (eg. Softball,
short throw to get someone out in Tee ball, Playing Bocci/Boules and is used in ten
pin bowling etc.).

On finishing have the students pick up the most throwing equipment and get back
to the magic spot before the Teacher counts to five.

Lesson Evaluation:

NOTE: Use different sized balls to vary the difficulty of the activity.

If the ball goes too high (late release) or too low (early release) this indicates a
mistimed release.

Failure to step forward with the opposite foot to the throwing arm.

An inadequate follow through.
