Physical Education 9th grade through 12th grade


1. Course Description: This physical education class is designed to address the Arizona Physical Education
State Standards. These standards can be found on the Arizona Department of Education website
(http://www.azed.gov). This class is designed to develop basic skills while introducing new rules,
techniques, strategies, and knowledge of sport, physical education and physical activity.

State of Arizona Physical Education Standards:


Standard 1 The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and
movement patterns.
Standard 2 The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies, and
tactics related to movement and performance.
Standard 3 The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and
maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.
Standard 4 The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that
respects self and others.
Standard 5 The physically literate individual recognizes the value of physical activity for health,
enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.

Grading and Assessment: Students will be evaluated based upon how well they meet the daily objectives
relative to the state standard being addressed. Grades are categorized into the following categories;
40% =

Dressing out & being prepared for class
PE Journals and skills assessment
Sportsmanship & (other projects)

Grading scale: A = 100-90 B = 89-80 C = 79-70 D = 69-60 F = 59 and below

4. Physical Education Journals:

Students will be required to keep a physical education journal (notebook)


throughout the school year.
The physical education journal will be graded and counts for more than 20% of
your grade. (journal grade and participation grade)
Students will keep track of important personal data and use the journals to
track their progress throughout the school year. (vocabulary, personal fitness
data, mile time, etc.)

Students are encouraged to use their journal for reflection on learning and
daily lessons.
Journals will be checked weekly for grades and collected at the end of the semester
for final grading.

5. Dress Code:
Students are required to dress out for physical education class.
(appropriate sneakers, t shirts, athletic shorts)
Schools uniforms are not required, but students are required to wear appropriate
clothing suited for physical activity and physical fitness
(sneakers suitable
for both indoor and outdoor activity or other athletic shoes, shorts and tshirts or other clothing approved by physical education teacher)
No A-shirts or tank tops allowed.
Students will be required to adhere to the school dress code policy at all times during
PE. (See school handbook for official dress code policy).

Locker Rooms:
Students are required to purchase their own combination lock for PE
class AND will be required to provide the combination to the physical
education teacher.
Running, screaming, yelling, or whistling is not permitted in the locker
room.
Dont kick, slam, or pound doors. Respect school property.
Lock up your own items at all times. San Tan Foothills High School is
not responsible for any lost, misplaced, or stolen items.
PE teacher will be keep combination information safe and will only be
used in the even that the student forgets his or her own combination.
Use restroom and drink water before leaving the locker room.
Students WILL NOT be allowed to re-enter the locker room until 5
minutes before the class period ends.
Students are NOT ALLOWED to use cell phones in the locker room. DO NOT
TAKE PICTURES INSIDE THE LOCKER ROOM.

7. Classroom Policies and Procedures:


Students are allowed 5 minutes from the last bell/late bell to be in the
designated area dressed and ready to learn so that attendance can be
taken and lessons can begin promptly.
If the student are not in the assigned areas when the teacher begins to take
attendance, the student may be marked tardy or absent.
Students are strongly encouraged to use the restroom before class, as the locker
room will be locked and students will not be allowed to re-enter the locker room until
5 minutes before the class period ends.
Students are required to bring journals to class when instructed to do so.

Do not write on, or remove items from bulletin board.

Dont touch the equipment unless directed by the PE Teacher.


Students should bring water with them to PE class.
Students are allowed to have, and are encouraged to have sun screen and should
apply as needed. (sunscreen is students responsibility)
Students will be allowed to get water as needed, but will be required to have a
written bathroom pass in case of emergency.

Students will hold up one finger (index finger) indicating that they need water. Teacher
will give a thumbs up for recognition and to give okay.
Students are responsible for cleaning up after themselves and will take an active part
in keeping a clean and safe physical education environment.
Students will conduct themselves in a respectful environment toward all fellow
classmates, teachers, facility workers, and administration.

Absences from class:

A note from the parent will be required for a student missing 2 days, a doctors note must be
provided for a student missing a 3rd day of PE class.
Students who cannot participate in physical education because of a written note from a doctor will
complete the following criteria:
Excused for 1-5 consecutive days completion of sports articles with a passing grade of
69% or better.
Excused for 6-15 consecutive days complete one 750 word essay on teachers sports or
fitness related topic.
Excused for 16-30 consecutive days complete two 750 word essays on teachers sports or
fitness related topics.

actively participate to the best of his or her ability, and do so with
a positive and respectful nature toward their classmates and
teachers.
