ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL

Arrival: As students arrive on campus at 7:30 a.m., they are to report to breakfast if eating and then directly to
their assigned waiting area near their classroom. Parents are to in their cars or, if walking, remain behind the red
line and depart promptly. If entering campus, parents show drivers license or photo ID in office to obtain a badge
to report to the cafeteria to pay for breakfast or eat in designated area or to escort their child to the waiting area
and promptly depart. Per district policy parents are not to wait with child(ren) on property. We expect all
students to arrive on time to school but recognize that all mornings do not always go as planned. If your child is
late to school, you must personally come to the front office, sign in your child(ren) with the office staff, and then
allow your child to wait for a student or adult escort to take them to class. In an instance when office staff may
request an approved volunteer/parent walk their own child to class, the student enters without the parent as the
school day has already begun.
Dismissal: Dismissal procedures involve all adults on campus as students are escorted to their designated areas of
departure. Due to safety and security procedures and school board policy, parents are prohibited from waiting at
classrooms. Dismissal begins for K-2 students at 2:00 p.m. and for 3-5 students at 2:05 p.m. Therefore, parents of
students in grades 3-5 may wait until 2:05 to arrive. All parents are to wait in their vehicles in the right lane of
the pick-up loop. Each family is assigned a pick-up number to support the safety of our students. On the occasion
you need to park and exit your car, parent parking is provided in the south parking lot beyond the staff parking
lot. The appropriate entrance is the connected eastbound sidewalk adjacent to the fence separating pedestrians from
the staff parking lot. If walking, parents are to gather at the picnic tables located at either side (east or west) of
the pick-up loop or, for kindergarten families, outside the fence on Maryland Terrace. Use sidewalks during
departure and avoid crossing any vehicle traffic areas on campus, including crosswalks, for safety and efficiency
during the dismissal time at the end of each school day.

Early Dismissal: Early dismissal needs to be kept to a minimum since it interrupts classroom instruction for all
students and deprives academic instructional time from your student. Please refrain from early dismissal except in
emergency or for doctors appointment. If an emergency arises, we require you to show your drivers license or
photo ID in the front office, sign your child(ren) out, and then wait in the office for your child to arrive. On
occasion you may be issued a badge to walk to class to pick up your child(ren). In addition, early dismissals will
be marked as an absence for part of the day on your childs attendance record. If you know in advance that you
will need to pick up your child early, please send a note to the teacher so the backpack may be prepared prior to
your arrival at the office.
Important: We realize that emergencies arise during the day, but most dismissal changes can be arranged prior to
the start of school and should be sent to us in writing. Please do not request dismissal changes after 1:15 p.m., as
we cannot assure a message will be delivered after that time.
ATTENDANCE
Students are encouraged and expected to be in school every day and to remain in school all day. Any time your
child is absent from school, you are to call the school at (386) 822-6986 and select Attendance from the
automated answering system or extension 21737. You will be directed to leave your childs name, teachers name,
and a brief reason for being absent. Excused absences may include personal illness, doctors appointments, death in
the family, or observance of a religious holiday. Family vacations, parents illness, and other avoidable absences are
not excused. Make up work is encouraged and accepted for both types of absences. After 15 absences, a doctors
note is required.
BICYCLES
All bicycle riders must wear a helmet, bring their own bicycle lock, and are responsible for locking their bicycle
daily. A bike rack is located on each the east and west sides of campus. School personnel are not responsible for
stolen bicycles, accessories, or scooters. Skateboards, rollerblades and scooters may be carried on campus with
principal permission and stored in classrooms. Rollerblading, roller skating, & shoes with wheels are not permitted on
campus.
BRING YOUR OWN TECHNOLOGY (BYOT)
The Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) program allows student in participating schools and classrooms to use
their own devices (laptops, iPads, tablets, Kindles, etc.) to school for instructional purposes. Teachers in participating
classrooms at George Marks Elementary will notify parents accordingly of expectations concerning the use of personal
devices in school. Devices are not to be used in classrooms without prior BYOT communication from the classroom
teacher. Personal cell phones and iPods are not part of BYOT.
BUS REGULATIONS
Riding the school bus is a privilege for students who live more than two miles from the school and who follow
the bus rules. Students are issued a bus ID card, may ride a bus only if they are assigned to that particular bus,
and must utilize only their assigned bus and bus stop. The ID card or birthdate is used to enter and exit the bus.
Students who are not eligible to ride a school bus may not ride a school bus. Please read rules for Transported
Students in the Code of Student Conduct and Discipline. In the best interest of safety, your child must obey all rules
and regulations. Improper conduct may result in the revoking of this privilege. (Transportation requests that students
in kindergarten and first grade include name, address, and phone numbers on the inside of each backpack.)

CAFETERIA (School Way Caf)

School Way Caf offers a breakfast and lunch program for all students. Breakfast is served from 7:30-7:55 a.m.,
with the hot items offered at 7:30 and bagged items offered at 7:45. Lunch is served according to the assigned
schedule and varies by teacher and grade level. It is the responsibility of the student and parent to pay for
breakfast and/or lunch prior to being served. Meals and/or a la carte items should be paid for before school starts
each day, and parents are encouraged to pay for the several days in advance. Prepaying lunches decreases wait
time, and payments are received in the lunchroom each morning or online.
Online credit or debit card payments are accepted for student meals and a la carte items at
www.myLunchMoney.com (800-479-3531). Letters go home in the beginning of each school year with your students
ten digit customer ID number. You may use this number to create an account for your student. Please note there
is no fee for parents to set up an account and view a meal history. If parents wish to use myLunchMoney for prepayment, there is a $1.95 per transaction fee. Therefore, you may choose to pay for more than one week at a
time. (Prices are subject to change each school year.)
Financial assistance for lunch is available on an as-needed basis. Applications for free and/or reduced-price meals
are available in the school office and on the district website. Your application could help our school qualify for Title
I funding to support instructional programs. If enough families apply and qualify for the free and/or reduced price
program, our school may earn Title I funding even if you qualify and then choose not to use the program.
For families using the free and/or reduced price program, applications must be completed and approved prior to
receiving assistance. Students who received free and/or reduced-price meals last year must re-apply each school year
to continue the program. They will receive a few free and/or reduced-price meals allowing parents a short grace
period to complete the new form. Please handle this task promptly so your child is not unnecessarily charged for
meals as these charges are non-refundable and are to be repaid by the parent to the school.
Students who forget or lose their money may be loaned money for one day and repay the cafeteria the following
school day as funds remain available. Those who borrow must return the funds promptly so other students may be
helped. Food allergies should be reported promptly to the cafeteria manager with documentation from a medical
doctor. Monthly menus are posted on the website. If you have questions regarding School Way Caf, please call
(386) 822-6986, extension 21899.
CAFETERIA EXPECTATIONS
The use of good manners and maintaining a safe and orderly cafeteria are necessary. Student behavior in the
cafeteria is based on safety, courtesy, and cleanliness. Students must sit in their assigned area, remain seated until
dismissed, talk quietly, refrain from exchanging food, leave the table and floor area clean, walk at all times, and
demonstrate respect to other students, school staff, and school property. If your child brings a packed lunch, please
pack a balanced, ready-to-serve meal without carbonated drinks, candy, gum, or glass containers. Microwave ovens
are not provided for student use. (For visitor expectations, please see Safety section.)
CLASSROOM BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
The School Health Advisory Committee was charged with the task of studying and making recommendations on
best nutrition practices and vending for Volusia County Schools by the superintendent. The committee recommended
that on the elementary level birthday party celebrations be limited in each classroom. The intent was to limit the
intake of sweets and extra calories for students in the fight against childhood obesity. At George Marks Elementary
birthday snacks, if professionally prepared and provided by parents, are passed out in the cafeteria as the children
finish their lunch. Please prearrange with your child(ren)s teacher, and consider healthy alternatives, as several
students have dietary restrictions resulting in exclusion from receiving a treat.

CLINIC
The clinic is for minor first aid treatment, medication administration, and for providing a temporary resting place
for sick children. Please keep the office updated with current medical information, contact information, and phone
numbers. Students running a fever or vomiting will be sent home. (Also see Medication section.)
CODE OF CONDUCT
All students must follow the rules and regulations as outlined in the Volusia County Code of Student Conduct and
Discipline. These regulations are to be reviewed by the parent and child and the acknowledgment form signed by
both. The classroom teacher also reviews the Code of Conduct. Every effort is made to inform parents when a child
is sent to the office for disciplinary concerns.
DISCIPLINE
Our goal is to help every child become a responsible person. The students at George Marks Elementary will
behave in a respectful manner at all times. In order to instill responsibility in our students, we have initiated school
wide common language and behavioral expectations practices. Our guiding principles for our positive behavior
support efforts follow:
P
Perform your personal best.
A
Act responsibly.
W
Work and play safely.
S
Show respect.
Students who behave in a responsible, respectful, safe, and personal best method are often rewarded. Various
positive reinforcement programs occur in the classroom, special area classes, cafeteria, and via the guidance
department. Refer to the Volusia County Code of Student Conduct and Discipline for specific details of appropriate
behavior and possible consequences for misbehavior.
Unless requested by the teacher in writing, toys and games must remain home. Only approved school supplies
should be brought to school. Additional items that threaten a safe and orderly school environment, such as weapons,
tobacco products, drugs and alcohol, and pornographic materials, are strictly prohibited. School personnel will not be
responsible for any lost or stolen personal items.
DRESS CODE
Students should come to school neat and clean in modest and appropriate school clothes. Students are expected
to dress in a manner that promotes the health, safety, and general well-being of all and does not have a distracting
or disruptive influence. The appropriateness of student's clothes and/or shoes is at the discretion of the teacher
and/or administration and should conform to the dress code established by Volusia County Schools. Please see the
complete Volusia County Schools Dress Code on the district website at http://myvolusiaschools.org and adhere
accordingly. Dress code violations are handled via parental involvement and discipline referrals to ensure compliance.
EMERGENCY INFORMATION
An emergency card will be sent home with each student at the beginning of each school year or completed upon
enrollment. Please complete and update the card with current information and return it to the school immediately.
All students must have a completed emergency information form on file in the school office. It is extremely important
that we have accurate home, work, emergency phone numbers, and street address. We recommend that you list
several emergency contacts and phone numbers. If your address, home phone number, or other phone numbers

change during the year, please notify the office immediately. We utilize Connect Ed to call families with important
information, and your primary number is essential. A secondary number is requested when parents live separately.
If a change in address, telephone number, or emergency contact occurs, please notify the office immediately. The
office must always have updated emergency contact numbers on file in case of an emergency. Proof of residence
should accompany a change in address.
FIELD TRIPS
Field trips are a part of the instructional program. Teachers plan field trips that will enhance the educational
curriculum. All field trips must have prior permission from the administration, and all students must have written
permission from a parent or guardian on a formal permission form. With administrative involvement, students may
be prohibited from attending a field trip if the teacher feels that the student has not demonstrated sufficient selfcontrol to safely accompany the class. In the event that this decision is made, the teacher will make provisions for
the student(s) to remain at school under proper supervision. Similar provisions will be made when a parent elects to
keep their child from participating in a school field trip.
Chaperones must have cleared volunteer status and be pre-approved by the administration. Selected chaperones
will be considered an official part of the group and must ride the school provided transportation to and from the
field trip site. Siblings of involved students are not to attend the field trip unless also part of the official school
group as determined by school enrollment records and grade level. The school reserves the right to limit the
number of official chaperones participating in any given trip.
Parents wishing to follow along on the field trip must have prior administrative approval to do so, must be a
cleared volunteer, and may or may not be restricted entry due to allotted size of school group. If a cleared
volunteer parent does receive approval to follow along, they cannot be chaperones, cannot be responsible for
supervision of students, and cannot ride on school provided transportation. Siblings and extended family members,
school-aged or otherwise, are not to attend. If transporting own child to and from the field trip site, prior
administrative approval must be obtained and the child must be checked out prior to departure from school.
Parents who are not cleared volunteers may not follow along on the field trip or attempt to be with the field trip
group in any manner as board policy and state law prohibits such activity.
FREE and/or REDUCED LUNCH PROGRAM
Applications for the Free and/or Reduced Lunch Program are available in the school office and online. A parent
letter accompanies the application with simple instructions for completing it. Approval takes two to ten days. One
application per family must be completed each year to participate in the program. Qualifying for this program could
help our school qualify for Title I funding to support instructional programs. More information is included in the
Cafeteria (School Way Caf) section of this handbook.
HOMEWORK
Homework is an integral part of the learning process and should be done primarily for practice that reinforces
lessons presented in school. Homework provides and encourages parental involvement in your childs education. All
students will be assigned homework of reading 20 or more minutes each night and may receive additional practice
tasks Monday through Thursday. As part of our PAWS on Books reading incentive program, a PAWS Path form is
signed for each uninterrupted 20 minute period a student reads at home. The PAWS Path is returned to school for
recognition and prizes. Reading Counts books and tests comprise another reading incentive program at GME.

INTERIM REPORTS/REPORT CARDS

Report cards are issued four times a year and the Interim Report is sent during the middle of each grading

Students should check lost and found near the cafeteria exit or office as soon as they realize something is missing.
Unclaimed items will be donated to local charity organizations. We strongly recommend that personal items,
including jackets, lunch boxes, book bags, etc., be clearly marked with your childs name.
MEDIA CENTER
The media center offers many materials and services that provide a resource for learning. The media center is
available for student use Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. (1:15 p.m. on Early Release Days).
Family literacy nights or afternoons will be held in our media center. Specific dates will be announced. Parents
accompany children after school hours. Throughout the year, parents may contact the media specialist to request
access to the Internet for school related activities such as Parent Portal and myLunchMoney.com or to attend
computer classes for parents if offered.
MEDICATION
School personnel can only administer any medication with the Authorization to Administer Prescription Medication
form completed by the parent and the physician. Under no circumstances can a child carry or receive medication
without this signed form. Forms may be faxed to our school office at (386) 626-0059. Medication must be brought
to the school by an adult and signed in by the health technician or office personnel. Cough drops, chap-stick, and
other over-the-counter medications are not permitted without a doctors order and the completed form. Medication
must be in the original container with the pharmacy label intact, and only one weeks supply may be brought at a
time. Emergency care plans for life threatening illnesses must also be on file. At the end of the school year your
childs medication and equipment must be picked up from the clinic by the end of the last school day or will be

disposed of according to Volusia County School Board guidelines. If you have any questions, please call the health
technician at (386) 822-6986, extension 21898.
PARENT / GUARDIAN INVOLVEMENT
Parents who are involved in their childs schooling can make the difference. Families are encouraged to become
registered volunteers and active members of our Parent Teacher Association (PTA). Your support will help to ensure a
better school. Volunteering and/or participating at PTA sponsored events are always needed and appreciated.
Membership is encouraged even if you are unable to volunteer as membership dues help fund PTA programs for
students, staff, and families. Yearly dues are $6.00 per member or $10.00 per family. All schools have a School
Advisory Council (SAC) composed of teachers, parents, students, and community members. The primary purpose of the
SAC is to assist in the continuing evaluation and implementation of a plan to improve student performance. If you
are interested in joining our SAC or PTA please contact office personnel. Get involved in your childs school! Be there!
YOURE INVITED. Please join us for a SAC or PTA meeting. SAC begins at 4:00 p.m. PTA begins at 5:00 p.m.
Meetings will be held in the media center on the following dates: September 14, October 12, November 9, December
14, January 11, February 8, March 14, April 11, and May 9.
PARENT DROP-OFF AND PICK- UP
The parking lot accessed via Amelia Avenue has been reserved for most parent drop-off and pick-up activity. The
entrance on Garfield has been reserved for school buses. The Maryland Terrace loop off of Garfield Avenue has been
designated as a drop-off and pick-up loop for kindergarten families. In each area please keep the right lane free of
parking and use only for dropping off and picking up students. The left lane is for exiting and drive-through only.
Based on availability, parking spaces may be utilized in the parking lot south of staff parking accessed via Amelia
Avenue for those who need to come inside for parent teacher conferences. Park in designated parking spaces, and
use the connected eastbound sidewalk adjacent to the fence separating pedestrians from the staff parking lot.
Dismissal begins for K-2 students at 2:00 p.m. and for 3-5 students at 2:05 p.m. Therefore, parents of students
in grades 3-5 may wait until 2:05 to arrive. Children should be picked up within ten minutes of their dismissal.
Older siblings should wait with younger siblings so parents stop only once to pick up the entire family. Each family
is assigned a pick-up number to support the safety of our students. All drivers are to wait in their vehicles in the
right lane of the pick-up loop and pull forward to pick up children. No student should be picked up in the middle
of a traffic lane or walking to meet your car in the parking lot. Cell phones should not be in use. Please follow
posted signage when on and exiting campus.
Please be patient. Our childrens safety is our number one priority.
PARENT / GUARDIAN RESPONSIBILITIES
The cooperation of parents/guardians, family members, school personnel, and students is essential for good
discipline in school to be achieved. Parents/guardians may contribute to good discipline by:
1. Maintaining a positive attitude toward education;
2. Showing an interest in their childrens progress through regular communication with their children
and the school;
3. Ensuring their children are neat, clean, and adhering to dress code;
4. Ensuring their childrens timely daily attendance;
5. Promptly reporting and explaining any absence to school officials;
6. Teaching their children respect for authority of school personnel;

7.
8.
9.

Informing the school immediately of any condition or circumstance which may affect their childrens
ability to learn, to attend school regularly, or to participate in school activities;
Cooperating with school personnel in solving disciplinary problems; and
Ensuring their children are not allowed to disrupt the education of others.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES
Parents and teachers are encouraged to have conferences concerning a childs academic and behavioral progress
each semester. Parents wishing to speak with the teacher should arrange for a conference ahead of time via phone
call to the office or written note to the teacher. Conferences are not permitted while school is in session unless
scheduled during a teachers planning period. An atmosphere of mutual respect will be maintained in accordance with
School Board Policy 418.
PARTY INVITATIONS
Please do not ask your childs teacher to pass out party invitations to individual students. It is very difficult and
confusing for children when they are not invited. Instead please handle such arrangements off school campus.
PHONE USE / CELL PHONE POLICY
Children may use the school phone in case of emergency or upon teacher instruction. Plan ahead. After school
visits, sleepovers, and forgotten work or money are not considered emergencies. Teachers and/or office personnel will
be responsible for deciding what constitutes an emergency. Student cell phones are to be out of sight and out of
use during school hours except when otherwise designated by school personnel. During standardized testing cell
phones are not permitted at all. Students who violate cell phone procedures may have their cell phone confiscated
and returned to an adult.

SAFETY
Student safety and student learning are at the forefront of every decision made at George Marks Elementary School.
Please adhere to the following information accordingly.
Traffic Plan: The Garfield Avenue entrance is reserved for school buses and registered daycare facility vehicles. All
other traffic is to enter and exit via Amelia Avenue. The parking lot accessed from Amelia Avenue has been reserved
for most parent drop off and pick up activity with Maryland Terrace reserved for kindergarten families. Please keep
the right lane free of parking and use only for dropping off and picking up students. The left lane is for drivethrough only. No parking or parent entrance to campus are permitted at Maryland Terrace. At the Amelia Avenue
entrance, parking spaces are provided for people who need to leave their vehicle. Please only park in designated
parking spaces rather than along the curbs. Be mindful of pedestrian crosswalks, leaving these clear of your stopped
vehicle and utilizing the crosswalks and sidewalks when walking. Lets model appropriate procedures for our
children. Please be patient. Safety is our number one priority in the parking lot area.

Vehicle on Campus: All vehicles parked on campus are to be locked. A locked vehicle serves as a deterrent to theft
and burglary. Remove keys from the ignition and turn off the motor when leaving your vehicle. Except in the case
of law enforcement, weapons are never permitted on school property, even stored in your vehicle.
Driving Expectations: Stop texting; put cell phones down; pull forward; drive slowly; watch for children and adults;
use signal to change lanes; use appropriate parking spaces, follow posted signage and instructions.
Car Seat: Florida Statute requires children under age 5 to be in a proper car seat and all passengers to be in a seat
belt. In the pick-up loop it is alarming when parents arrive with toddlers crawling on seats without restraint or
driving away without proper seating arrangements for all passengers in the vehicle. Please respond accordingly
within the confines of the law for the safety of our most precious cargoyour children. If you are in need of a
proper restraining device, most fire departments provide free car seats for children of the appropriate age and size.
Emergency Codes and Drills:
Although unlikely, emergency situations may occur, and we must be prepared. We have at least one emergency
drill per month. If you should happen to be on campus when the alarm sounds, please follow the directions of
school personnel. No vehicles will be allowed to enter or leave the parking areas during the drill. If you are in
your vehicle, you are not to approach the students or buildings until the all clear is given and the students have
returned to the classroom areas. These procedures are in place to protect the children, and your cooperation is
appreciated.
Students and staff are trained on a variety of emergency procedures, and the following code phrases will be used
in emergency situations at George Marks Elementary.
1. Code Blue Bomb Threat. Everyone will evacuate all buildings, cease use of cell phones and radios, and
proceed to their designated fire drill area unless directed otherwise by school or emergency personnel.
2. Code Yellow Hazardous Material (HAZMAT). Everyone will remain inside, similar to a lockdown situation,
unless directed otherwise. This code is used in the case of a chemical spill or leak of some kind.
3. Code Green Severe Weather and/or Tornado. Everyone prepares to take cover should an actual weather
issue impact our area in which case everyone comes inside regular structures (buildings) and may be
required to assume the protective crouch position covering their head.
4. Code Red Lockdown. Everyone will remain inside with doors locked, and no one is allowed to leave the
locked classrooms or offices. This code is used as a precaution in response to local police activity as well
as in the case of a potential hostage or weapon situation.
5. Fire Alarm Fire drill or evacuation. Everyone evacuates all buildings immediately.
Should a real emergency occur, the Connect Ed calling system will be utilized to notify parents. In the event of
a real emergency, the parent staging area would be set up at Big Lots on Woodland Boulevard. It is important to
always keep your phone numbers and contact information current with the front office.
George Marks Elementary School is required to follow the security procedures as set forth by the School Board of
Volusia County and outlined in the George Marks Elementary School Security Procedures Manual.
Visitors:
The school has one central point for receiving parents and visitors, which is the main office located in building
one. Parents and visitors with valid school-related business on school campus are required to check in at the office,
show drivers license or photo ID to office personnel, and sign in accordingly. You will be given an ID badge to

wear in a visible place at all times. Upon conclusion of your visit, you return to the office to sign out and return
your badge upon departure. Anyone without a badge will be directed to the office for clearance or must leave
campus.
If visiting during lunch and after obtaining a proper ID badge from the office, parents may take their own child
from lunch and utilize the outside picnic tables or the single designated table inside the cafeteria. Friends and
extended family are not to be included. The visit must conclude at the end of the childs scheduled lunch period.
On occasion, special arrangements may be made for grandparents if listed on the emergency card.
Visiting or observing classrooms during school hours must be prearranged. There will be a predetermined start and
stop time with the visit lasting up to 30 minutes. Visitors must have an escort and may observe without interacting
or conferencing.
Smoking: Per state statue smoking is not permitted on campus, even in your car.
Personal Hygiene and Infection Control: The school implements procedures that help limit the spread of infectious
disease and support the wellness policy. Students are taught cough/sneeze etiquette and hand washing. When
parents share snacks with a class, food items must be prepackaged or prepared professionally. Items baked in
someones home kitchen are not permitted.
Avoiding Bullying & Harassment: Written procedures alone will not stop or prevent harassment. Students are
educated regarding expectations and prevention strategies. The school fosters understanding of others differences.
We have programs in place to identify the early warning signs of student violence and to reduce the number of
violence risk factors. The school has structured playground activities, behavioral monitoring, behavioral counseling,
tutoring, mentoring opportunities, and an Extended Day Enrichment Program. Students are expected to report
problems to adults or may do so anonymously using the Bulldogs Care box in the Media Center.
SCHOOL INSURANCE
School insurance is available to all students. A packet of information will be sent home at the beginning of each
school year. Purchase of the insurance is optional.
SUPERVISION
Supervision is provided for all students beginning at 7:30 a.m. and lasting until ten minutes after the dismissal
bell. From 7:30-7:50 a.m., students wait outside of their classroom door. The only students permitted to arrive prior
to 7:30 are those enrolled in the morning day care program or chorus as scheduled. A morning day care program
is available for a fee through the Extended Day Enrichment Program (EDEP) beginning at 6:30 a.m. They also offer
after school care until 5:45 p.m. Contact the EDEP Facilitator between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on
school days to register.
TEXTBOOKS / LIBRARY BOOKS / SCHOOL PROPERTY
Textbooks and other instructional materials, which are loaned to students, are expensive and expected to last for
many years. It is the responsibility of the student to keep books, materials, desks, and school property clean and
undamaged. Parents are expected to pay for lost or damaged school property.
VOLUNTEERS
We welcome and appreciate volunteers. All volunteer applicants must be cleared by the county office and school
principal/designee before they are allowed to assist at any school activity. In order to volunteer at school or
chaperone on a field trip, the Jessica Lunsford Act (JLA) requires volunteers to have a cleared form on file. This

process takes time; therefore, it is recommended you complete an application early in the year. We keep a current
volunteer report in the office, and your clearance lasts up to five years before reapplication is required. Applications
are available in the office and on line at the district web site. Following clearance, volunteer activities may be
arranged through the Volunteer Coordinator or designee.
When you arrive on campus for a volunteer activity, please go to the front office to show your drivers license or
photo ID and sign in on the computer. You will then be given an ID badge that must be worn in a visible place
while on campus. Be sure to stop by the office to sign out and turn in your badge when you are leaving campus.
Recorded volunteer hours help our school with your wonderful service and also contribute toward our school effort to
earn the Golden School Award and Five Star School Award. Thank you for your service.
WITHDRAWING OR TRANSFERRING
Parents are requested to contact the office in advance if your child is transferring to another school. Time is
needed for the teacher, media specialist, and cafeteria manager to fill out forms and compile information. When
withdrawing your child, please make sure that all textbooks and library books have been returned and that all
outstanding accounts have been paid.
