Question Type
Yes, I believe my questions were clearly structured and
understood by students, although when I asked a question I
had to expand on the question a bit more to get more of a
accurate response from my students as the classes I
undertook were all modified students. I was very confident
when doing my whole classroom lesson, however my teacher
did not give me a chance to teach a small group. I taught my
lesson to year 9 classes. I prepared for my lesson all week and
I succeeded successfully.
Yes, I definitely used a whole variety of question types such

particular point, however I also used open questions to
encourage the discussion with the students and receive a
variety of responses from them. However the questions I
constructed had no right or wrong answer as it depended on
their person opinion to help me do a whole class copy change
poem. The questions require both abstract and concrete
thinking to receive a more appropriate response. I took good
use of my factual questions with my group as I asked them
recall with their own sentence on what adjective noun is. This
technique helped me get a wide range of answers from the
students and helped me understand their understanding of
that particular word.
Yes, I balanced my questions very well as I used both

students.
Using a wide range of different questions whilst teaching
your students a lesson is very important as it encourages the
to think creatively and critically. However different type of
questions opens a variety of responses from your learners. It
also challenges students ability as we want out learners to
make judgements, inference of particular thing whilst it
being demonstrating it in the classroom and it challenges
students thinking and imagination. During my lesson I made
sure I used a wide variety of questions to make sure my
students think critically and learn what I am trying teach.

Distributing and Directing Questions

Did you recognise any
pattern in the distribution
of your questions
amongst the students?
Consider reasons for this
pattern?

How have you directed

questions to the group?

Have you used wait

time?

Did you make eye

contact with the group as
you directed your
questions?

Murdoch University
5

Yes, I did not recognise that much of a pattern whilst

distributing my questions to my students, however I asked
questions in a even manner and I took good use of what
and who questions and received a wide range of responses
from my students.

Students were all seated on their tables and I greeted my

learners and introduced myself and what I was going to
teach. I asked a students a question about my topic I asked
Who knows what a copy change poem is I received
different types of answers. However when asking my
students questions I made sure I paused and gave them time
to think as it is important to pause and wait for responses
rather than moving on and not giving students a opportunity
to think. However I did directly asked students by their
name to answer my questions to get their attention as they
were getting of the task.
I did not have a opportunity to do a wait time for my small
group but I used it more frequently when teaching my whole
class lesson. I used this method to get the students attention
when they werent doing what they are supposed to be
doing and when I wanted to get responses from my students.
When I asking a question I tend to pause and extend my wait
time for about 3-5 seconds. However asking students
questions in a enthusiastic manner to receive great responses
from your students and it also makes your students feel a bit
more comfortable with you.
Making eye contact with your students is extremely
important as it shows your students that you want to hear
their response as well as it shows respect, appreciation,
understanding and interest towards your students. When
giving eye contact it makes your student feel comfortable
with you as you are showing interest. However I encouraged
all my students to respond and participate in our discussion,

as there is no such thing is wrong and right answers.

However I got responses from the same students during our
discussion, so I picked on the students who werent
participating as it gives them a chance to share their ideas
and answers with the class.
Reactions to Students Responses
Yes, I took good use of the praise technique with my students
as I praised them whenever they got something right or they
tried their best by saying Good job, well done, excellent.
Making sure I get more responses from my students in the
class, as it is very important to praise your student.

Redirecting and making good use of your students questions

What use do you make of is very important as it develops student learning and
the students responses
encourages your students.. However, redirecting questions
to develop the teaching
are very important as you are making your students being

responses and get more of an understanding from my
learners. Whenever I asked a question I redirected it on
another student as I asked Taha What do you think a copy
change poem is I got a response from Taha and I asked
Ahmed do you agree with Tahas answer and why? This is
a very important technique as it improves the students
learning.
No, my mentor teacher was also an evaluator of the
students answers. As a future teacher, I believe I will

Observation Sheet Management

Professional Practice:
1. Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments
2. Planning for Effective Management
Was your lesson plan
effective for managing
the class?
e.g. How did the
students react to your
lesson overall and to
your planned activities?
Did anything unexpected
happen?
Did you provide a variety
of activities?
Were you satisfied with
your timing, particularly
for the end of the
lesson?
Did you feel you were
able to change things if
needed?

Were you aware of

classroom procedures
and school disciplinary
policy? How much did

Murdoch University
11

Yes, I believe my lesson was very effective as I took my time

to construct my lesson plan as my lesson was literature and I
love English, I had to write a lesson about ways to write a
horror copy change poem. I was told my students were more
of a visual learner I provided my students with a power
point presentation which included variety of questions that
related to their task. I also wrote my own version of the
students task to give my students better understanding. My
students and me constructed a copy change poem to get y
students started on the task and give them a precise idea.
My lesson all went according to plan and I didnt have
anything unexpected happen during my lesson. I gave my
students a task to write their own horror copy change poem
from a existing poem, taking a good use of their adjective
and nouns to construct their poem. Once they were done
they were asked to re-write their poem in a good copy but
before that they had to come to me first before they could
move on to the next task. This gave my students variety of
activity to keep them all busy throughout the lesson. I was
very satisfied with my lesson as it was very effective and my
timing was exactly what I expected the lesson to be and i
personally believe my students learnt very well with the way
I taught them as I got a response from my mentor that my
students did better on this task than the high achiever last
year. However, I do not believe I would change anything as
my lesson was very successful and I was really proud of
myself from the results I received from my students as well
as their responses.
The school is set in a effective way as the weak students and
the high achievers are all segregated into two, which makes it
easy for me and the teachers to construct a lesson for the
students as they are all on the same learning level. However, I

did ask my teacher a class list of the students name and I

highlighted the students who had difficult answering
questions and reading whilst I was observing. This method

Maintaining a Positive Attitude in the Classroom

How did you demonstrate
to the students that you
valued them, and enjoyed
learning?
e.g. Tone of voice, facial
expression, sense of
humour, introduction to
students and topic.

I showed the students that I valued them, and

enjoyed learning by accepting everyone and know
that they are special in their own way regardless
their ability. Also I showed respect, appreciation, and
understanding for each student. I built rapport with
some students. It was hard in high school to
demonstrate to them that you valued them, and
enjoyed learning because most of them didn't even
want to learn or listen to you. The students that
listened you are the one that got the positive
approach from me. I was speaking to the students I
never raised my voice because it is important to talk
in a nice manner. It is good to approach students in a
positive way rather than raising your voice because
they did some wrong. Never be aggressive toward
students be assertive. Smiling makes communication
easier, less awkward, and more persuasive. Its also a
mood-changer and will evoke warm and happy
feelings in both the giver and the recipient.

Personally, I thought maintaining a classroom attention will

misbehave I stopped the whole class and waited for him to

stop what he was doing. I also tended to ask the student why
he was doing that in front of the class to make sure the
student feels shy and doesnt do it again and it worked very
well. However, there was a variety of activities that was set
up for the students to participate to keep them busy and the
task was really interesting for them as they had to make their
poem horror and they really enjoyed doing It and it caught
all my students attention as it was a all boy classroom.

No, the student did not know what was expected from them
as I was introducing how to do a copy change poem for the
very first time, however my students previously did poems
in the past. I taught my students the task very successfully
and they now know what a copy change poem is.
Yes, there was this one student that kept laughing at the
students response and did not want to participate when it
was his turn and I told him off in a nice manner and he
stopped and when he repeated it my mentor told him off and
he was paying attention throughout the lesson.

Dealing with Minor Misbehaviour

Were you aware of what
was happening in all
parts of the classroom?
Did you know what each
student was doing?

Yes, I knew what was happening in all parts of the classroom

and I was aware of what the students were doing. However
when I noticed a student getting off the task I deliberately
moved towards them to the misbehaving student to get their
attention and get them back to the task.

Did you take any action

when you observed poor
behaviour? Why? Why
not?

Yes, the reason I took action when I observed poor behaviour

or when I was seeing a student on their phone I confiscated it
and told the student off when they werent on they bets
behaviour because it is significant that teachers specifically
indicate what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour in
the classroom to students.

Did you use non-verbal

cues? e.g. Contact,
pause, gesture,
movement toward
student/s concerned.

Overall Comments

Murdoch University

Yes, I used eye contact to communicate to students

that their behaviour is inappropriate. I moved toward
the student that was misbehaving to prevent their
behaviour.

Schools as text looking at the whole school

Describe the school in terms
of its demographics,
appearance and resources
(be general here and do not
name the school).

The school I attend was a very big school as it

contained 800 secondary students with a unique mix
of students from a wide variety of cultural and ethnic
backgrounds allowing students to develop a better
understanding of the Australian multicultural society.
However students are taught to be proud Australian
citizens The school consist of large buildings and is
association is made of all parents and guardians of
students that are enrolled at the school.

What were the roles and

responsibilities of the
teaching staff you observed?

It is the responsibility of teaching staff to

ensure that assessments are valid, fair,
reliable, explicit, and authentic. Also maintain
accurate records of students achievement and
assessments. Most teaching staff I observed
had their roles and responsibilities. For
example, there was classroom teachers who
were responsible for their own classrooms.
Their roles were to deliver education to the
learners and their responsibilities was all about
improving education for their learners future.
Teachers have many roles and responsibilities
in the school. Teachers prepare lessons,
assessments, assignments and homework for
the students. Furthermore, they work to assist
students development and growth. I observed
teacher assistants, the roles and
responsibilities involve working with teachers
to encourage, help and support students with
special needs in the classroom. Relieve
teachers were there to take the role of an
absence classroom teacher. The roles and
responsibilities of the principal is very
important. It is principal role to lead, plan, and
manage delivery. Also it is their responsibilities
to look after the school and teaching staff.

What did you observe non-

maintain the school and the buildings.

Community responsibilities refer to a range of
activities with a community focus that may
have an impact on teaching and learning and
working responsibilities. Community
responsibilities can include jury service,
volunteer fire fighting during a bushfire,
volunteer away time with community
organisations, and attendance at cultural and
religious ceremonies. The community was
there to support teaching and learning in the
school.

Students
You will have observed the
diverse nature of your classes.
How was this diversity
supported?

Murdoch University
21

Diversity is a very important and it was

supported by encouraging all educators to be
more aware of how cultural diversity affects
their own teaching practices, across all
disciplines and faculties, is a key step in
ensuring that students enjoy positive
experiences of cultural diversity in their
education. There has always been diversity in
the classroom, but in todays society it is
significant to embrace it and make positive
use of it. I realised that by having a diverse
group of students in the classroom means
recognising that all the students are unique in
their own way. When people value diversity,
they recognise and respect the fact that
people are different and that these differences
is generally a good thing. For example, when
attempting to solve a problem, it is better to
assemble a diverse team with many skills and
many different ways of approaching the
problem than it is to assemble a team that has
all their strength concentrated in one area.

Function of Schools
Did you observe the
connection of your schools
with the broader community?
How did this happen?

Unfortunately, I did not observe the connection of

my school with broader community. As I was in
the English department, however during the
week I was there, there was parent-teaching
meeting with the teacher for students to
improve their learning. Although, I do know that
all Australian schools engage children and
young people, parents, carers, families, other
education and training providers, business and
the broader community to support students
progress through schooling, and to provide
them with rich learning, personal development
and citizenship opportunities. Families and
communities work together with schools as
partners in the education of children and young
people in a planned, systematic and sustainable
way.

What do you think the

function of school is?

The function of school is preparing students

with future skills. Development of inborn
potentialities- Education helps the child to
develop the inborn potentialities of child
providing scope to develop. Modifying
behaviour- Education helps to modify the past
behaviour through learning and through
different agencies of education. All-round
development Education aims at the all round
development of child-physical, mental, social,
emotional, and spiritual. Preparing for the
future- After completion of education the child
can earn its livelihood getting proper education,
which has productivity. The education should be
imparted according to the own interest of the
child. Developing personality- The whole
personality of the child is developed physically,
intellectually, morally, socially, aesthetically
and spiritually. Helping for adjustability- Man
differs from beast. Man has reasoning and
thinking power. Man tries his best to adjust with
his own environment through education
