Dear Parent and/or Guardian,
Hello! Our names are Ms. McHugh and Mr. Mazzarano and we are lucky enough to have your son or
daughter in one of our classes. Your child will find that we are tough, but fair teachers who have planned an
exciting and productive school year.
Our particular style of teaching is based on three things: setting high expectations for EVERY student,
showing respect for all students and expecting respect in return, and last, but certainly not least, parental
involvement. It is our belief that when parents and teachers work together a student can accomplish anything.
It is our hope to keep in close contact with parents/ guardians throughout the year. Feel free to contact us by
phone call (Tel: 718-733-4656) and e-mail (E-mail: liana.mchugh@fhsaonline.org and
james.mazzarano@fhsaonline.org). Additionally, this year we will be using Class Dojo (an application that
tracks specific behaviors in class) and Remind (an application that allows us to text message you) to keep in
contact. More information will be sent home in the coming days about Class Dojo and Remind. If you would
ever like to meet in person, please do not hesitate to contact us to schedule a convenient time. Please dont
feel that you need to wait for us to contact you should you wish to talk.
To help your child succeed in our math class, there are three simple things that you can do:
1. STUDY/ DO HOMEWORK AT HOME We assign homework just about every night so that
students can get the valuable practice time that they need to really learn what we are studying in class.
Make sure that your student spends time each night working on their homework. If they get stuck and
need help, we will post videos on our class website (FHSAalgebra.weebly.com) for each lesson/ topic
that we cover. We also encourage students to contact us either via e-mail or the Remind App with any
questions that they may have.
2. ENCOURAGE Encourage your student to ask questions in class and come in for extra help when
he or she needs it. We, as well as our three Blue Engine teaching assistants, are available before
school, during lunch, and after school. Also, praise him or her for doing wellhe or she deserves it!
3. ASK HIM/HER WHAT HE/SHE LEARNED Have your student explain what he or she learned
in class each day. This simple routine will help him or her review and find holes in his or her
understanding.
To help us serve your student better, we would be grateful if you could take five minutes out of your busy day
and complete the accompanied parent survey. Please have your student return it to us as a homework
assignment by Thursday. Feel free to use the backside of the survey for any questions or comments that you
may have for us at this time. We look forward to working with you and your student!
Most Sincerely,
Ms. McHugh and Mr. Mazzarano
