Project Zandaro-2010 Presentation

(By Ann ATAMAS, Group 33-E)

I am going to enlighten you on the project we are about to

start. It aims at working out a realistic plan of an
imaginary humanitarian aid mission through discussion
and teamwork. According to the scenario we, the students
of Group 33-E, represent a Ukrainian non-governmental
analytical center called U-Aid, which means, of course,
‘Ukrainian Aid’ or, maybe, aid delivered by YOU – in
person. Both meanings suit us. Does everybody have the
factfile? It is on page 93, Student’s Book. Good. Now, here
is the situation.

There is a country in a tropical region which is suffering virtually all imaginable

problems. The name of the country is ZANDARO,
with the capital city of Zangora. The population of
Zandaro is estimated to be 10 million people with
GNP (Gross National Product) hardly reaching 100
US dollars per capita. Social problems are even
worse because the unemployment level may
exceed 30 per cent. Being an agricultural country, Zandaro’s only significant crop is
bananas due to poor soil. There is some industry in Zagora, namely a chemical
factory. The factory produces fertilizers and its outdated equipment pollutes the
only river and Lake Grand. The south-western part of the country includes a
territory disputed with the neighboring nation. This long lasting armed conflict,
although not being an intensive one, adds the factor of military threat.

Recent floods caused by torrential rains resulted in destruction of the road network,
which had been substandard even prior to the disaster, and the only airport. Two
days ago the Republic of Zandaro was hit by an earthquake, which caused major
damage, primarily in and around the capital. The combination of natural
phenomena added some landslides to the general picture. International community
has already sent rescue teams to the area to search for survivors. Our goal is to
work out the plan of further aid to Zandaro in the areas of health protection,
housing, infrastructure and education.

I suggest forming the project working teams comprising two

persons each. Sasha Tretevych and Sasha Melnychenko will
work on medical issues; Ivan Batalyuk and Sasha Sikorsky will
deal with infrastructure: roads, bridges and so on; Yuri
Ishchenko and Vlad Smirinsky will work out the housing plan
and Kate Boiko with Vlad Budchenko will see to the education.
