Curriculum content description:
Investigate how visual and multimodal texts allude to or draw on other texts or
images to enhance and layer meaning (ACELA1548)

Students prior knowledge and experience:


Students have basic understanding of the type of formats of documentaries and
some common topics or issues displayed by documentaries. Students have
previously explored films so they have an understanding of visual codes.

Learning purpose:
To establish a basic understanding of visual texts and to be able to identify some
documentary conventions.

Learning objectives:

On completion of this lesson,

- Answer basic conventional
questions regarding content from
the documentary

Students will be asked to identify

intervals throughout the
documentary
I will ask them to share their
answers. Students will also

ideas created by the

Wifi set up so Youtube can be accessed
A Day in the Life of a Dictator Youtube

Questions to ask:
- List as many codes/conventions that you know of
- What codes and conventions have you noticed so far?
- List 3 codes/conventions that have been used

Catering for diversity


In the class there is a student with a very low academic levels. Mentor teacher has
advised to leave be as the student can get very aggressive.
I have a list of noticeable codes/conventions in the documentary hint at some if
students have little understanding of them.

Wait until quiet, give instructions to get pens and journals out then
sit quietly.
Wait until class is quiet to proceed.
Ask students about their previous knowledge regarding codes and
conventions.
Get them to list what they know

Ask 3 students to share what they have write answers on

Get students to copy down if they dont already have them
Documentary will be on dictators essentially, can anyone tell me

Lesson conclusion:

The lesson will be concluded with the students sharing their


answers, this will allow me to offer feedback that reflect the lesson
objectives.

I needed to make sure that technology works before going into the class, there was a few
technical difficulties. Other than that I think the lesson went well. I maintained a relatively
well behaved classroom, although one student walked out and that threw me a bit. I did
send a student out who had already been given one warning and continued to misbehave.
Next time I think I need to use more low key management skills such as gestures and eye
contact. I would change the language of some of the questions I asked to make them
more simple to allow every student to understand what I am asking of them.
