Step
One:
Inferenc
e

When making inferences you make a logical guess using evidence from the text, your own knowledge, and common sense.
Character Trait
Use the adjectives list on
next page

Analyze a character's
actions and words to
determine his values,
morals or ethics.

Inference

Textual Evidence

Explain your rationale for using the adjective in the first

column (use common sense).
What ideas led you to label the character with that
adjective?

Support your inference: look for details that

reveal important aspects of setting, plot, and
character.

1.Devoted

King Arthur asked him to go see what women most

desired and the knight didnt stop until he found out.

2.Depressed

When the knight couldnt find any women to answer

his question he began to feel defeated and like he
would let his king down.

3.Rude

When the group of ladies approved him of his life, he

failed to hold his end of the bargain by trying to
change the deal and not keep his word.

Step
Two:
Predicti
on

Line 918-920: He took his leave and forth

he went to ride, He sought in every house
and every place in hopes he could secure
the promised grace.
Line 984-986: When seeing that he
couldnt find it out That is to say, what
women love the most-felt in his breast
already like a ghost.
Line 1045: They all agreed, Hes worthy
of his life.
Line 1055-1060: She said, She Said,
that you will take me as your wife;..The
Knight replied, Alas, how woes abuse me!
I know I made the promise youve
expressed. For love of God, please choose
a new request.

When you make an inference about the future, it is a prediction.

Determine what motivates a character, what his values are, and predict what his next action will be.
Summarize the situation to show
your understanding do not
simply copy the text

Describe the characters next action

based on your inference about his
values, morals and/or past actions.
What do you think he is going to do
based on the situation?

Describe the characters past behavior that

supports your prediction. What decisions
did he make? What actions did he take that
display his value or belief system?

2. After the group of ladies all

approved of the knight he tried
to reject his deal he made with
the old lady.
3. The old lady gives the knight
the ability to take her as his
wife like they talked about or
he can go free.
1. When the knight started on
his journey to find out what
women wanted, he couldnt
find anyone and knew hed let
the king down.

Based on the knights previous

actions, I think he will go forth
with making the old lady his wife,
but be miserable.
The knight finally says he will take
her as his wife.

He finds a group of ladies that hes

able to question and fulfills the
mission.

When King Arthur told him to go find

out what a woman desires most, it was
hard and he started getting depressed,
but it finally worked out for him and he
got it done.
His perseverance through finding out
what women want and agreeing to his
promise, displays his, doing the right
thing character.
Throughout the story, he always does
what he is asked and what he promises
to anyone he comes in contact with.
