All students must have their books with them for every class.

A big question to keep in mind throughout these first two weeks: What is the effect of the beginning of the play, and how does Shakespeare
achieve that effect through the choices he makes as a writer? Some smaller questions: What seems important or interesting about the setting of
the play? What kind of a person is Romeo? Do you like him?

Our essential questions:

1. What does Romeo and Juliet have to teach us about the nature of love?
2. What does Romeo and Juliet have to teach us about youth?
3. How does Shakespeare use the voices of different characters to set up a “thematic conversation” and explore ideas from several
different points of view?
