Fall of Portugal:
Untilnow, thetreatyoftordesillashadeffectively divided spain
and portugal to the east and west sides of south america respectively. After the
death of King Sebastian I, there was a succession crisis because he had no heir.
Spain quickly tookadvantage ofthisopportunityandunitedthetwokingdoms.As
the Spanish declared war on England, the portuguese colonies in the new world
were neglected and resulted inthedecreasedrelevanceofthe portugueseinsouth

with india, much like the Dutch. The French then also set their eyes on the new
world.From17011763,EnglandandFrancewouldcompete,butnotonhomesoil,
but rather in trade. The British East India Company and the French East India
Company fought over domination in India, with neither being theobviousvictor.
