AfterwordofColumbusdiscoveryoftheAmericasreachedbacktoEurope,
conflictsoonrosebetweenPortugalandSpain.Thetwocountriesdisputedoverthe
ownershipofthisnewlydiscoveredlandandbothwantedcontroloverit.OnMay4,
1493,PopeAlexanderI,whowasSpanish,issuedadecreetoestablishanimaginaryline
runningnorthandsouththroughthemidAtlanticOcean,100leaguesfromtheCape
Verdeislands.Thisdemarcationwouldseparatethenewworldintwosections.Spain
wouldhavecontrolovertheterritoriestothewestofthelineandPortugalwouldhave
controlovertheterritoriestotheeastoftheline.Thissettlement,however,gaveSpain
muchmorelandthanPortugal.KingJohnIIofPortugalwasunsatisfiedwiththetreaty
becauseitgaveSpainmoreland,itpreventedPortugalfromhavingclaimoverIndia,and
becauseitgaveSpaincontroloverpartofPortugalstraderoutedownthecoastofAfrica.
KingJohnIInegotiatedwithKingFerdinandandQueenIsabellaofSpaintomoveline
westward.In1494,thelinewasrenegotiatedandanewagreementwasratified.Thenew
agreementreestablishedtheline370leagueswestoftheCapeVerdeIslands.This
ratificationtookplaceintheSpanishtownofTordesillasandwasratifiedbyPopeJulius
II.Underthenewagreement,PortugalclaimedcontrolofwhatisknowntodayasBrazil,
whileSpainlaidclaimovertheotherSouthernAmericancountriesandtheCaribbean.
Atfirst,thetreatyfavoredSpaineconomically.Westoftheimaginaryline
includedtheAztecsandIncas.SpainclaimedtheseareasandestablishedSpanish
coloniesinthemthatproducedlotsofwealthyrichessuchassilverandgold.The
Portuguese,however,didnotfindasmuchwealthintheterritorygiventothem.The

affectfrommovingthedemarcationcanbeseeinhowtodayBrazilistheonly
PortuguesespeakingcountryoftheAmericas.SouthAmericaandtheCaribbean,
however,areallSpanishspeaking.AlthoughthetreatyfavoredSpainonpeople,itdid
notserveitspurpose.Europeancountriesdidnotrecognizetheguidelinessetbythe
treatyandinsteadproceededstraightthroughwiththeirexplorations.TheSpanishdidnot
evenresistPortugalsexpansionofBrazil,butdidhoweverdisputePortuguesesattempts
ofexpansioninAsia.Between1580and1640thetreatywasnotatallenforcedsinceat
thistimetheSpanishKingwasalsothePortugueseKing.Thetreatycontinuedtobe
ignoredasSpainandPortugalspowerintheNewWorlddeclinedandotherEuropean
countriescolonizedandstakedtheirclaiminNewWorld.
