She was an English Language teacher, teaching in Sekolah Menengah Dato’ Harun, a school in the poorer parts of Petaling Jaya. 2 Most of her students were from squatter areas, some of whom had to work fora 5 living in the afternoon and evening after attending school in the morning. The saddest part of schools in poor neighbourhoods is that the motivated students were forced by their parents to help them with work, while the unmotivated ones were sent to school because their parents had given up on them, 3 Adibah was from a middle class family with a technician father and doting 10 mother. The reason why she even went into the teaching profession was that she was inspired by her own teachers when she was in school. She attended Convent Bukit Nenas where she was wonderfully nurtured, thanks to teachers who had a passion for the job. 4 At school Adibah joined the school choir right from Standard One through 15 Form Four. Her choir teacher at that time was Mr. Khoo who was known as the “funny man’ of the school. So inspired was Adibah with her teachers and with her singing experiences in school that she would start her own music collection and blast her favourite songs at home each day after school. 5 But as a teacher in Kampung Dato’ Harun, she would have a difficult task 20 inspiring her students to enjoy music. There were no singing or music lessons. Despite that, she managed to start the schoo! choir. She got the students motivated that the number grew and the choir became the pride of the school. She even wrote the school song! 6 Unfortunately the community did not appreciate what she had done. She was 25 frustrated and to deal with it, she went to karaoke lounges in the evening after school. There she would sing her worries and frustrations away, and at the same e win new friends, some of whom were professionals — engineers and accountants, 7 It was this encounter with new friends that sparked off Adibah’s career in the 30 entertainment industry. Her friends were quite amazed by her singing and started giving her the encouragement to consider taking it up as a career. Some even thought that she could become a famous singer. She was then called up for the actual contest and breezed right through to the finals, Eventually, she won the top prize in the Suara 90an Singing Competition and took home RM25,000. Her fame spread after that and she was invited to sing at weddings and company annual dinners. But there was no real recording offer from anyone. She was rejected by 40 recording companies who felt she was overweight. Adibah was even offered a slimming package. She simply could not tolerate these insults. She then decided to quit teaching in order to concentrate on making money from singing at corporate functions and got herself involved in jingles for commercials. She also acted in films such as Seper and Gubra directed by the late Yasmin 45 Ahmad, a famous film director, All this working round-the-clock soon allowed her to save. She went on to produce her own album, Terlalu Istimewa with RM100,000 from her hard-earned savings.
