Course Overview
Advanced Functions and Modeling provides opportunities for students to deepen understanding
and knowledge of functions based mathematics. Problem solving and critical thinking will provide
the structure in which functions (polynomial, exponential. logarithmic, and rational) are studied.
Experimental design will provide the foundation for data gathering, curve sketching, and curve
fitting in order to provide a graphical interpretation of real world situations. Graphing calculators
and other emerging technologies along with the precepts of transformational graphing will be
incorporated into instruction to enhance teaching and learning. Mathematical communication,
reasoning, problem solving, critical thinking, and multiple representations will be emphasized
throughout the course.

Class Rules & Expectations
It goes without saying the importance of a safe and orderly classroom in order to create a
conducive learning environment for all students. Class rules and expectations should be upheld
at all times. Violation of any class rules will result in disciplinary actions at the teachers
discretion.
Class Rules
(1) Follow all school rules and class expectations.
(2) Do not disrupt your classmates from learning.
(3) Do not disrupt the teacher from teaching.
(4) Help create and maintain a safe and effective learning environment.
(5) Keep a positive attitude and do your very best.
Expectations
- Students are expected to show respect him/herself, other classmates, and the teacher.
- Students are expected to arrive on time and be prepared for class.
- Students are expected to play an active role in their education by fully participating during all
class discussions and activities.
- Students are expected to keep track of their grades and maintain an organized notebook for
personal reference and documentation.
- Students are expected to seek the help of the teacher when necessary.
Attendance & Make-Up Work
It is very important that students are present every day. In the event that an absence does
occur, it is the students responsibility to get the notes and assignments missed at a noninstructional time. All missed work is to be made up in a timely manner. Please speak with the
teacher when you collect your work to set up an appropriate time for the work to be completed.
If you miss a quiz, it will not be made up due to the fact that quizzes are graded and returned
quickly. Instead, a missed quiz will be marked as such until the chapter test is completed; then,
the test grade will take the place of the missing quiz grade in addition to counting its normal
percentage. If you miss a test, you have five days to make up the exam. If you schedule a time
to make up a test and fail to show during this scheduled time, the teacher reserves the right to
count this grade as a 0.

Grading
40% Tests
Students will be given a comprehensive test at the end of each chapter to
demonstrate his/her
mastery of the material covered.
30% Quizzes
Quizzes will be a used frequently for more immediate feedback on learning.
These may be both
announced and unannounced at the teachers discretion.
20% Homework Nightly homework will be given for students to practice the concepts covered in
class that day.
Homework assignments will be checked variety of ways including but not limited
to the
following: collected and graded for accuracy, collected and checked for
completion, checked for
completion, checked during whiteboard discussions, checked with answer keys.
10% Classwork Assignments completed in class will be checked in the same methods described
for homework.
A teacher-made Mid-Term Exam will count as two tests grades for the first quarter report card. A
teacher-made Final Exam will count as 25% of the overall course grade.
(1st Quarter Grade .375) + (2nd Quarter Grade .375) + (Final Exam .25) = Final Grade
Late Work Policy
No late homework will be accepted. No exceptions. If you are absent, the latest homework
assignment will be due on the day that you return. For all other assignments (projects, papers,
take-home test/quizzes), the following will occur: teacher will deduct 20 points per day for each
day the assignment is late. This includes weekends, as those days are viable time for
assignment completion. After 5 days, the assignment will not be accepted.
Cell Phone/Electronics Use Policy
We are living in a technologically driven age and education is no exception. You will have to do
research beyond the textbook and your notes to complete many assignments in this class;
therefore there may be times students will need to use their own electronic devices. If we are
unable to be on school computers, I will give students a heads up that they may bring in their
laptop, iPod, iPad, or phones in order to do research. This will be the only time students are
allowed on any electronic device. If cell phones/electronic devices are out without teacher
permission the following consequences will occur:
1st violation- warning
2nd violation- teaching will collect the device until the end of the class
3rd violation- teacher will collect the device and the student will pick it up at the end of the
day; a parent will be notified
4th violation- teacher will collect the device and a parent/guardian will have to pick it up
If student continues to violate the electronics use policy, detention will be assigned and a
parent/guardian will have to pick up the students phone every time it is collected.
Academic Integrity Policy
A student who engages in or attempts to engage in cheating, plagiarism, or falsification of
school-related assignments and/or documents shall be subject to disciplinary action included but
not limited to all parties receiving a zero on the assignment and administrative referral.
