Safety Instructions

1.1.1

General

The external antennas used in the TC-2450 are for scanners, i.e. receivers only. They
do not emit any radiation. However, the employed phones and USB devices emit
radio waves for communication purposes. Please consult the user guides of the
corresponding devices for safety instructions.
Minimum distance from an antenna
To ensure personal safety and to limit the exposure to electromagnetic
fields, follow the recommendations stated in NT11-20071 Radio-Frequency
Electromagnetic Exposure. As an example, please keep a minimum
distance of 10 cm from a GSM 900 MHz antenna and 7 cm from a GSM
1800 MHz antenna in free sight. If obstacles are present, the minimum
distance is reduced.
Local regulations
Local regulations are used in some countries for general public and also for
persons using medical devices in-vitro or implanted. They have to be
followed if they impose stricter limits than stated above.
Internal regulations
Internal regulations used within a company or service provider and having
stricter safety limits than stated above have to be followed.
Minimum distance from an antenna while using TC-2450
In addition to the above recommendations, please note that in the worst
case, a minimum distance of about 9 cm from the GSM 800 band phones
might be reached while carrying the TC-2450. Please do not carry the TC2450 on your back if you use any medical electronic implants, e.g. a heart
pacemaker.

Protect the battery against wet, humidity, heat (max. 65C / 113F battery
temperature) and mechanical damage.
Protect the environment
Do NOT dispose of the battery in domestic waste. Hand it in at a recycling
point or your nearest Ascom agent.

TC-2450 Interface Module

The interface module in the TEMS Investigation TC-2450 has the following features:

Power switch turning output power on/off

Three (3) USB 2.0 ports

Three (3) unregulated power outputs

DC power input for charging and powering the system

2.1

Power Switch

The power switch turns off all the power outputs on the interface module. However, it
does not disconnect the power from the batteries to the internal charger board. This is
why the LEDs will briefly light when the batteries are connected.

Note: Do not ship the unit with the batteries connected. Always disconnect the
batteries prior to shipment.

Resettable Breaker

The system provides a maximum output current of 9 A. This is guarded by the 9 A

breaker.

Auxiliary Power Outputs

These three DC jack outputs provide a maximum current of 4 A when the system is
fully populated with two Audio Capturing Units. They are intended to be used with
scanning receivers or any future options offered by Ascom. The voltage from these
connectors is not regulated; voltage is provided directly from the batteries. The
connectors are tied directly to the 9 A circuit breaker.

2.4

Charging

To charge the batteries, connect the Ascom provided AC/DC or DC/DC power supply
to the input DC power connector. This power supply has enough wattage to charge and
operate the system. However, the higher the load on the power outputs, the longer it
will take to charge the batteries.

2.4.1

Charging Indicators

The BATTERY 1 and BATTERY 2 LEDs will blink while the battery is being charged.
When the batteries are fully charged, the LEDs are lit continuously.
The ERROR LED only lights if there is a charging fault. This typically means that the
battery needs to be recalibrated. Read the desktop charger manual for instructions on
how to recalibrate the batteries. If the fault persists, then possibly the battery is faulty
and needs to be replaced.

Battery Warning System

The system monitors the battery voltage. When the batteries reach approximately 8.5 V
parallel potential, the buzzer alarm will sound. As the battery continues to deplete, the
alarm will becomes more frequent. However, in most cases you will only receive three
notifications before the batteries can no longer provide enough power to the system.
It is highly recommended that you change the batteries after the first alarm. Keep in
mind that the batteries will deplete faster with a higher load, so the time from the first
alarm to the final alarm will vary.
The alarm works properly only with two batteries installed. One battery is not able to
sustain the alarm function, because the battery depletes too quickly. Therefore, only
operate the system with two batteries installed.
If you do not want to hear the alarm, then set the LOW BATTERY ALARM switch OFF.
Be aware that the system will then shut down without warning.

2.6

Battery Cables

The battery cables are physically attached to the interface module. These are
specifically designed to work with the lithium-ion batteries provided by Ascom.
Note: Never substitute any other battery for those provided.

Push the battery into the connector (which is keyed to prevent any error of
attachment). See the image below.

The batteries sit side-by-side behind the interface module. Remove the interface
module and push in the batteries. Then reinstall the interface module, trapping the
batteries in place.

2.7

Audio Capturing Unit Power Cables

It is possible to install two Audio Capturing Units (ACUs) or two Phone Control Units
(PCUs). Two power cables are provided for these devices.

Connect the DC plug to the USB + Power cable provided with the ACU/PCU. The
DC receptacle is located on the cable junction, as shown below.

USB Interface

The USB hub connects directly to your computer through the USB 3.0 Type B
connector. All cables that pass from the TC-2450 to the computer are routed through
the outer cover zipper.

Three USB 2.0 Type A connectors are provided for scanners and for the TEMS
Investigation security key.

2.9

Installing the Interface Module

The interface module is physically mounted into the TC-2450.

2.9.1

Mounting the Interface Module into the Large TC-2450

Loosen the side knobs.

Place the bottom pins into the internal panel slots.

Slide down the interface module and tighten the knobs.

Mounting Phones

All phones are mounted to the cover with phone cradles. The phone cradles are held to
the cover with hook material (Velcro) and can be placed in any location. Tie wrap
blocks are provided for cable management.

The TC-2450 case supports multiple types of scanners. The mounting kit instructions
are provided with the kit itself. The images below show some of the different scanners

Federal Communication Commission (FCC) guidelines respecting safety levels of radio
frequency (RF) exposure, which in turn are consistent with the following safety
