RE: Jason Martinez Matter
Dear Members of the APS Board and Superintendent Valentino
| am writing this leter to express my concern regarding the revent disclosures about Mr. Jason
Martinez, who was hired earlier this year as the Deputy Superintendent fr the Albuquerque Public
Schools. There is simply no explanation for exposing any of our children to an individual who has
ny violent or sexual criminal charges in his background,
[am requesting a detailed review, not only ofthe APS policies and procedures regarding the hiring
of staff, but also a thorough security assessment of the failures that allowed a person charged with
six counts of sexual assault on a child into our schools. Me. Martine2's employment within APS
for months without this information coming to light is @ stark reminder that vigilance is always,
requited when it comes tothe safety of our children,
{have assembled a team of specialized personnel within my office that is ready to lead the security
assessment as you move forward to ensure that this breach of the public trust and the endangerment
of the safety and security of our children will never be repeated. This team consists of policy
advisor, law enforcement personnel who specialize in the recognition and prevention of crimes
against children, and members of my community outreach team. The team ean offer different
perspectives on strengthening communication within the APS community to achieve the highest
‘standards for recruiting hiring, and retaining personnel who work with our children,

to omember the very sacred duty that we have to protet the children of New Mexico. [urge you
to take this incident as an opportunity to improve these processes and to ensure that this will never
happen again.
incerely,
