Course Description: In Pre-calculus, students continue to build on the K-8, Algebra I,
Algebra II, and Geometry foundations as they expand their understanding through other
mathematical experiences. Students use symbolic reasoning and analytical methods to
represent mathematical situations, to express generalizations, and to study mathematical
concepts and the relationships among them. Students use functions, equations, and limits as
useful tools for expressing generalizations and as means for analyzing and understanding a
broad variety of mathematical relationships. Students also use functions as well as symbolic
reasoning to represent and connect ideas in geometry, probability, statistics, trigonometry,
and calculus and to model physical situations. Students use a variety of representations
(concrete, pictorial, numerical, symbolic, graphical, and verbal), tools, and technology
(including, but not limited to, calculators with graphing capabilities, data collection devices,
and computers) to model functions and equations and solve real-life problems. Students are
expected to master these objectives before the end of this course.

Grade Weights For Determining Six-Weeks Grades:

Classwork/Homework
40% (Homework grades recorded if they improve
grade average)*
Tests
25% grade weight
Projects/Products
20% grade weight (Ex: composition, research paper,
presentation, report, etc)
Six-Week Test Grade
15% grade weight

Makeup Work Related to an Absence Policy: Students will be permitted to

make up assignments and tests without grade penalty after an absence. Giving
zeros as a grade is not a best practice, and, therefore, a zero can be recorded only
after a parent call/notification has been made and the student has been given two
days for every day missed or two days after parent notification to complete the
assignments or tests.

Late Work Not Related to an Absence Policy: Students will be given at least
one opportunity to submit late work not related to an absence. Makeup work not
related to an absence will be considered late if not submitted in the appropriate
time frame. Following offenses not related to an absence will be assessed a 30
point penalty.

Retesting Policy: To ensure that test grades reflect content mastery, a student
will be permitted to retake any major test that he or she has failed within five school
days of the date the failing grade was received or no later than ten days of the date
of the test. If the test is passed on the second attempt, the failing grade will be
removed from the grade book, and the passing grade will be recorded, with the
following exception. When student behavior or actions clearly demonstrate that a
major test was failed due to lack of effort or inappropriate behavior, a teacher, with
the principals approval, may assess a grade penalty. The grade penalty will be
either the average of the two tests or a 70 (if either the average or the second
attempt is above 70). The grade given to a student failing the test for the second
time will be the higher score earned on either test. The retesting policy will not
apply to ACPs.

Tutoring: Tutoring will be available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from
8:30-9:10. After school tutoring Wednesday: 4:15-5:15.

Bell ringer/Start-on-time: The student will need to be in class on time as bell

ringers will be administered during the first 10 minutes of the class period and may
be counted as a classwork grade by the teacher. If a student misses 3 bell ringers in
a row, teachers should contact the parents and maintain a parent contact log.

Skyline Classroom Management Plan and Classroom Rules:
1st Violation/Infraction Verbal Warning.
2nd Violation/Infraction Time out or Loss of privileges
3rd Violation/Infraction Teacher-Student Conference
4th Violation/Infraction Parent Contact
5th Violation/Infraction Parent-House Conference (Creation of RtI Plan)
6th Violation/Infraction Counselors Referral
7th Violation/Infraction Principals Referral
8th Violation/Infraction SST Referral

Rules:
1. The teacher and students will respect one another.
2. The teacher and students will come to class prepared (pencil, paper, etc.) and will
be in class on time.
3. The students will follow all guidelines listed in the Student Handbook.

Standardized Dress Code Policy: Each student will wear polo-style shirts
(Columbia blue, red, or white) and full length khaki or black pants Monday
Thursday. (Girls may wear khaki or black skirts.) On Fridays and other days
designated by the Principal, students may wear jeans AND a Skyline spirit shirt.
Opened toed shoes, hoods, and caps should not be worn during the instructional
school day.

I have received a copy and read this syllabus and understand the policies for PreCalculus.
