Glassware for Beer

ISO stands for International Standards Organization


Traditionally used for tasting wine
Used for official beer tasting events & competitions
Can be used for tasting any beer style

MAX
IDEAL - 50 ml

Flat, smooth glass inside and out


No colored glass to distract from the color of the beer
Total volume is approximately 210-225 ml (7.5-8 fl oz)
Ideal pour is 50ml, about 1/3 of the way up the glass
Never fill the glass more than 1/2 way (approx 80-100ml)
This allows for better head retention of the beer & maximum
aeration of the beer for best flavor and aroma
Best flavor occurs at 50 ml where the most favorable ratio of
beer surface area to air occurs

LIP

Called tulip because the shape looks like the tulip flower
Always has a glass stem, should be held by the stem or foot
Smooth clear glass, can be adorned with a logo or decoration
Standard size is 10 - 12 fl oz
Most appropriate for Belgian ales, sours, lambics, and some
IPAs
Flared top lip helps to open up aromas in the beer and to
retain large head (foam) on beer

Some will argue this is the only beer glass anyone needs!
FOOT

Tulip Glass

Traditionally used for liquors such as brandy and cognac


Adapted for drinking dark, viscous and/or high-alcohol beer
BOWL

styles such as barleywine, stouts and scotch ales


Wide-bowled and stemmed with tapered mouths for capturing
intense and volatile aromas
Should be held by the stem or foot for swirling and agitating
volatiles in the beer
Decorative styles range from clear smooth class with no ridges
to heavy cut lead-free crystal with intricate designs

Volumes range from 10 - 30 fl oz, but all provide plenty of


room for swirling the beer to get the proper aromas and
flavors

Snifter Glass

The most versatile beer glass of them all


Almost cylindrical, with a tapered bottom and wider mouth
Can be used for virtually any style of beer, including English,
Czech and German styles, IPAs, Belgians, sours, ciders, and
even good old American Malt Liquor!
They are cheap to make, easy to store, unpretentious, and
easy to drink out of
The bulge makes them easy to stack, as well as to hold
Made of thin clear glass with no color, but can have logo or
decorative elements applied to exterior for marketing
Two standard pint glass sizes: 16 fl oz (US tumbler) and 20 fl oz
are called Nonick
