Preparation
Make one copy of Worksheet 2A: Country
quiz for each student.

Procedure
1. Give each student a copy of the activity.
2. Check that students are familiar with
the names of the countries highlighted
on the map and the corresponding
nationality words, e.g., France, French.
3. Explain that students are to write one
quiz question about each country.
Demonstrate the activity as follows:
a. Write down some categories that can
help students to make their questions.
Categories can include: Places, Capital
Cities, Products, Food, Famous People.
b. Write down the following present
simple question starters: Whats the
capital city of . . . ?; Where is . . . from?;
Is . . . Korean/from Korea?

c. Elicit some example questions using
the categories and question starters.
4. Give the students time to write their quiz
questions. Help with vocabulary where
necessary.
5. Divide the students into pairs and
have them ask their partners their quiz
questions (alternatively, you can have
them mingle with their classmates,
asking their questions). If they are in
pairs, have them switch partners when
they have completed asking their
questions and ask and answer again.
6. After students have had the opportunity
to quiz a number of classmates, ask
them if anyone managed to answer all
their questions correctly.

Sample Conversations
A: Where is Justin Timberlake from?
B: Hes from the U.S.A.
A: Yes, thats right.

B: Is kimchi Japanese?
A: Yes, it is.
B: No, it isnt. Its Korean.

Follow Up
1. Make a chart on the board with two
columns. Write Countries at the top of
one column and Nationalities at the top
of the other.
2. Ask students to copy the table and ll
it in with the names of countries and
nationalities they know, e.g., Canada/
Canadian.
3. Divide the class into pairs. Have them
take turns to cover up one of their
columns and test their partner on the
missing country or nationality words.
