Lesson Plan for HD 445 Writing Our Stories

Jaynee Mendez & Erika Maldonado
Tuesday 07/21/2015

Age Group: 4 year olds

Duration: 9:30-9:50am (20min or as needed)

INTRODUCTION
Goals & Outcome

The goal for students is for them to be comfortable writing the letter Tt and be able to
recognize it out of order when not presented in an alphabet setting. Teachers should be aware of
the children who are confident with the letter and those that require more practice. The outcome
we would like students to have is recognizing the letter Tt without peer or teacher assistance.
By using fingers or tools such as straws/popsicle sticks students will practice their small motor
skills.
OBJECTIVE & SLO
Student Learning Objective

Students will learn to discriminate the letter T from the rest of the alphabet and practice
writing upper case and lower case T on shaving cream. Students will be able to recognize the
letter T and its sound along with correct way to write the letter. By using shaving cream
instead of paper and pencil students are being offered the opportunity to explore and try without
feeling the pressure to do it just right. This hands on activity also requires the use of the senses,
touching texture, smelling shaving cream and seeing colors mixing to form a new color.
ACTIVITY/PROCESS
Plan

Jaynee will gather students for story reading of Alphabeep as a group and interact with
the students as interest is shown.
Erika will be setting up the sensory activity while story is being read.
After the story is over along with questions and comments, students will be directed to
tables for the activity.
Students may choose seating they prefer freely.
A small mountain of shaving cream foam will then be placed in front of each student
directly on the table.
Students will be asked to smear the shaving cream with hands, teachers will assist
students who do not want to get dirty or have sensory issues.
The Letter Tt will then be written on a post it note so that each child can see proper
way of writing it and placed next to them. Modeling correct way to write the letter.
Students will be asked to practice writing the letter on shaving cream, popsicle sticks will
be given to students with sensory issues.
Students will be given ample space and time to explore and practice writing the letter
Tt.

ASSESMENT
Formative & Summative

Throughout the unit we will read books about the alphabet such as Alphabeep,
Thomas ABC Book and The BOAT Alphabet Book while asking volunteers to point
to the letter Tt in the story. We will document to make sure each child gets an
opportunity to recognize the letter in a group setting.
Two weeks after the unit is over we will play ABC BINGO and observe which students
can recognize letter Tt without assistance from teachers or peers. Will work one-to-one
with the students that need more practice and play I spy the letter using plastic letters
in a bag of rice.

REFLECTION

Would like for students to use what they learned from previous lesson plans Community
Workers and Safety to interact with the story read for this activity. Students would be able to
write the letter Tt without using visual props and discriminate the difference between upper
case T and lower case t.
