AFFIDAVIT OF PROBALE CAUSE:
Your affiant bases the Information upon the following:
The events of a fire being started at the Southern Utah University Centrum Arena
forced the investigation into the possibility of an arsonist. The video surveillance shows a
young man wearing red shoes, camouflage shorts, a black T-shirt and a backpack walking
through the tunnel that connects the loading dock and the arena and casually turns all the
way around, looking to see if he is alone. He then pulls a lighter out of his pocket as he
approaches the crate. Showing the setting of fire to the crate in an act of arson.
The video was placed on the Police Departments Facebook site and a tip came in
stating that a man who looked like the one in the video walked a certain path multiple
times everyday. Southern Utah University Police surveyed the area until the found a man
who identified himself as Todd Marshall Young.
Todd Marshall Young was interview, Post-Miranda, and stated that he was by the
Centrum around 0100 hours but was near the soccer fields. He also admitted to going
down the tunnel on different occasions to smoke marijuana. He stated that based on the
time stamp of the video he was at a party. When informed that the time stamp on the
video was incorrect and that the fire had actually occurred around the time that he
admitted to being on campus he then changed his story. Throughout the interview Young
changed his story so many times that it was impossible to tell what the truth was.
Southern Utah University Police asked if they could retrieve the clothing he was
wearing the night in question, to which he agreed. At Youngs house they found the red
shoes, camo pants, and necklaces that matched the ones the suspect wore in the video.
Based on the evidence found Young was arrested and charged with arson, a third
degree felony. After being placed in the patrol car Young, confessed to the arson.
He will therefore be charge with one count of burglary and one count of arson.
