Alignment to Curriculum & Professional Standards

Introduction
Curriculum and Professional Standards are intended to make quality education available
to all students. These standards are to ensure that education is fair and equitable. The standards
movement has evolved over the years to ensure the equity. Teachers working in the same
building were in the past potentially teaching different content to same age students. The gap
widened even more when one looked at the equity difference between privileged and
underprivileged schools (Levy, 2008). Equitable and fair as we all know is not the same for all.
Educators teaching students with exceptionalities have many curriculum resources available to
them to ensure the needs of all their students are met. All students are ensured that the education
they receive is taught by a certified teacher who is following all the standards. In the following
section the reader is able to get an understanding of my ability to differentiate for my students
while at the same time meeting the professional and curriculum standards for that lesson.

Curriculum & Professional Educational Standards

The following list is an explanation of what the bodies who generate the standards are
and how they impact planning, instruction and assessment.
INTASC Standards: (Interstate New Teacher Assessment Support Consortium Standards) The
Council of Chief State School Ofcers(CCSSO) is a nonpartisan, nationwide, nonprot
organization of public ofcials who head departments of elementary and secondary education in
the states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and ve U.S.

extra-state jurisdictions. CCSSO provides leadership, advocacy, and technical assistance on
major educational issues. The Council seeks member consensus on major educational issues and
expresses their views to civic and professional organizations, federal agencies, Congress, and the
public. The standards within this framework highlight best practices and hold educators to a
higher level ensuring that all students meet the state core curriculum standards (CCSSO, 2013).

NYS Code of Ethics for Educators: The Code of Ethics is a public statement by educators that
sets clear expectations and principles to guide practice and inspire professional excellence.
Educators believe a commonly held set of principles can assist in the individual exercise of
professional judgment. This Code speaks to the core values of the profession. "Educator" as used
throughout means all educators serving New York schools in positions requiring a certificate,
including classroom teachers, school leaders and pupil personnel service providers. The artifacts
at these standards relate to have been developed with collaboration, student success and my own
desire to strive to be an educator who never stops learning and improving, in mind (Board, 2002)
.
P-12 NYS Common Core Learning Standards for ELA, Math and Social Studies: These
curriculum standards are what ensures that all students are receiving a student focused equitable
public education. They are the benchmarks that need to be achieved to ensure student success.
Throughout my artifacts you will realize that they are anchored around these standards (Board,
2002)
Ontario Ministry of Education Curriculum: As with the New York State standards these
curriculum standards are what ensures that all students are receiving a student focused equitable
public education. They are the benchmarks that need to be achieved to ensure student success.

(Education, 2015).
TEAC Claims: TEAC claims are commitments of the Division of Education of Medaille
College about the quality of its graduates who are professionally ready and competent to become
school teachers. The claims are post markers of my teaching competency ensuring that as a
qualified teacher I am capable of preforming as a highly qualified teacher.
International Society for Technology Education for Teachers and Students (ISTE): These
standards have been developed to ensure that when I use technology a as tool to enhance learning
I have considered how it will be support my pedagogy and as well as ensure clear student goals
for it use. The integration of technology with in my planning, instruction and assessment is a key
element in preparing 21st students for success (ISTE, 2015).
Council for Exceptional Children (CEC): The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is the
largest international professional organization dedicated to improving the educational success of
individuals with disabilities and/or gifts and talents. CEC advocates for appropriate
governmental policies, sets professional standards, provides professional development, advocates
for individuals with exceptionalities, and helps professionals obtain conditions and resources
necessary for effective professional practice. Being a member of the CEC allows me to receive
the most current information and strategies about supporting exceptional students to succeed.

simply providing a bungie cord around a chair so a student who needs to move constantly can
move without disrupting the class. These are just a few of the accommodations that I have

learned from other colleagues struggling with similar situations. This is a valuable tool to
develop professionally and stay current (CEC, 2015).
Standards Chart
The following chart (see below) is designed to illustrate for the reader how my artifacts
are grounded in the curriculum and professional standards that drive my instruction. Most
artifacts a line with all required standards but due to the nature of some artifacts they may not
have a relevant standard to align with. As the reader reviews the chart they notice that my
artifacts do in most cases align with all the standards and that the standards have indeed focused
my planning, instruction and assessment.

Conclusion
Curriculum and professional standards as stated earlier have been developed so all
children can receive a quality public education that is fair and equitable for all (Levy, 2008). The
standards not only address what needs to taught to the students but how it is to be taught, using
best pedagogical practices. As shown my artifacts meet and exceed the standards but also
included in my artifacts are examples where I have differentiated for my students and the
standards have still been achieved. Standards ensure no matter what the exceptionality or
background of the student their education is fair and equitable.
