Introduction/Essential Question: What are colors?

Standard: SC.S.K.2
Students will

demonstrate knowledge, understanding and applications of scientific facts, concepts, principles, theories and
models as delineated in the objectives.

demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationships among physics, chemistry, biology and the earth and
space sciences.

apply knowledge, understanding and skills of science subject matter/concepts to daily life experiences.
Objectives:
A. General: SC.O.K.2.06 - identify colors.
B. Specific: When given different colors of play dough, crayons, or paint the students will be able to label the
basic colors. (Blue, Red, Yellow, Green, Orange, Purple, Black, Brown and White)
Methods: Demonstration, group work, discussion
Materials: Play dough, crayons (without label), crayons, printable coloring sheets (Easter Eggs), banana, blueberries,
apple, teddy bear, grapes, broccoli, orange, Crayola paint brush pens(the colors mentioned above),
Direct Instruction (I do): The first thing I will do is introduce the class to colors with everyday objects. I will start
with the three colors (Yellow, Blue and Red) since they are the beginnings of all colors. For yellow I will show the class
a banana, for blue: blueberries, red: apple. For the remaining colors, Brown: a teddy bear, purple: grapes, Green:
broccoli, Orange: an orange, Black: shoes (mine), White: blank sheet of paper. This will help them associate the color to
things they see every day. I would first say these out loud, then I would set up a table and lay each item beside the word
and a crayon of that color for reference.
Guided Practice (We do): The first activity I will have the students to do is give each child paint brush pens and
their Easter egg color sheet. On the sheet, there will be sections labeled with each color. The students assignment is to
color by name, and color the appropriate section with the color name thats provided.
Differentiation:
Tier1: The children are to color the egg with either the paint or the crayons, since the crayons have the names on
them it may be easier for some children.
Tier 2: The children are to color the appropriate sections by the directions.
Tier 3: Allow the children to mix the basic colors to make the different variations. Ex: Red and blue make
purple.
Closure: At the end I want the children to show each other their individual eggs and in groups of two or three to call off
the different colors of the egg sections to each other. Then go back and do a run through of the everyday objects and as a
class have them call out the color of the object.
Independent Practice (You do): At home the children are to find and write down 5 objects of different colors. They
will bring their papers and one of the objects to class the next day as a show Intel, and describe the object and the other
object they found.
