Thewaypeoplebehaveatworkvariesdrasticallydependingonthepersonorthejobthey
aregoinginto.AccordingtoTheFreeDictionary,workethicis
Anethicalprinciplethatplaces
greatestvalueonhardworkanddiligence.Workethic,however,encompassesmuchmorethan
justhardwork,whichisapparentthroughinterviewsofseveraldifferentpeoplewithdifferent
amountsofworkexperience.
ThefirstpersonIinterviewedwasKeillerMorash,whoisaparttimetenniscamp
counseloratBayOVistaSwimandTennisClub.Heisseventeenyearsoldandhasbeen
workingthereforonemonthsofar.
Keillerbelievesthatworkethicsinvolveworkinghonorablyandresponsibly.Hethinks
thathisworkethicsaregoodbecauseheshowsupontime,takescareofthekidswell,anddoes
notusehisphonewhileheisonhisshift.Hedoes,however,believethathecanimprovehis
workethicsbydoingmorethanwhatheistoldandstayingafterwardtohelpcleanup.When
askedwhetherpastaccountsofworkethicsshouldbetakenintoconsiderationbytheemployer
whendecidingwhetherornottohireaperson,Keillerrespondedthattheyshouldbecausebythe
timeapersongetsajob,theywillhavedevelopedcertainhabitsthatwillstickwiththem.
ThenextpersonIinterviewedwasMarleneCooper,whowasaPayrollSpecialistat
SenecaFamilyofAgenciesforseveralmonths.ShepreviouslyworkedatMandarinOrientalin
SanFranciscountilthecompanywasboughtout.
Marlenebelievesthathavingworkethicsmeansbeingrespectfulofyourcoworkers,
followingcompanypolicies,andvaluingtheopinionsofothers.Personallyshebelievesthatshe

hasgoodworkethicsbecauseshesreliable,punctual,andconfidential.Infact,Marlenedoesnot
knowwhereshecanimproveherworkethics.Unfortunately,shethinksthatrecenthighschool
graduatesdonottaketheirjobsseriouslyandthereforetendtobeunprofessional.Heradvicefor
thecurrentgenerationenteringtheworkforceistobeprofessional,valuetheirjobs,abideby
companyvalues,andberespectfulofothercoworkers.
VivianVuongworkedasaninternforFibrogenInc,undertheProcessDevelopment
Department.Sheworkedthereforabouttwomonthsbeforemovingtoworkatalawfirm.
Viviansdefinitionofworkethicishowhardapersonworks.Shebelievesthatherwork
ethicisgoodbecauseshelikesallherworktobeexcellentandwillnotacceptmediocrity.
Viviandoesthink,however,thatshecanimproveherworkethicbyimprovinghermorning
habits,whichsometimescausehertogettoworklate.Shethinksthatgraduatinghighschool
studentsdohavegoodworkethicsbecauseshehasfaiththattheyaregoodworkersunless
provenotherwise.
MasonMedeiroshasbeenworkingfortheCityofSanLeandroAquaticsfortwoyears.
HeisaLifeguardandSwimInstructorthere.HeisalsoplanningtointernattheAlamedaCounty
CoronersOffice.
WorkethicstoMasonarehowonetreatstheworkthattheyhavetodo,whichincludes
theattitudetowardtheirwork,whetherornottheydoit,iftheydoitquicklyandefficiently,and
whethertheydoittothebestoftheirabilities.Hebelievesthathisworkethicsaregoodbecause
healwaysdoeshisworkthebestthathecanandontime.However,sometimesheputsoffwork
andprocrastinatesandhethinksthathecanimproveinthatregardbymanaginghistimebetter.
Whenaskedaboutgraduatingseniors,herepliedthatthepoolofgraduatesisverylargesothe

qualityoftheirworkethicsvarieswidely.Somehaveoutstandingworkethicswhileothershave
badones.Itdependsonthejobitselfandhowthegraduatesthemselveswerebroughtup.He
doesnotthinkitsfairtogroupthemupanddescribethemasonebeing.
Finally,thereisTinaNaito,whohasbeenateacherwiththeSanLeandroAdultSchool
forfouryears.ShealsoteacheselementaryschoolkidswhodonotspeakEnglishastheirfirst
language.
Tinabelievesthatworkethicsrefertoone'sethicalandmoralprinciplesinregardsto
theirabilitytodotheirjob.Shefeelsthatshehasagoodworkethic.Tinashowsupontime,is
availableforquestionsbothbeforeandafterschool,andstaysuntilherjobisfinished,notatthe
arbitrarytimewhichistheendofhershift.Eventhoughshethinksthatshehasgoodwork
ethic,shealsobelievesthatthereisalwaysroomforimprovement.Shethinksthatshecanbe
moreflexibleandunderstandingwithstudentsthatarrivelate.Tinathinksthatrecenthighschool
graduatesforthemostparthavegoodworkethics.Theycanshowpromiseandcanbe
compassionate.
Personally,Ibelievethatthetermworkethicsisaverybroad,allencompassingterm
thatincludeshowhardapersonworksandtheirmoralintegrityattheworkplace.Apersons
workethiccandescribewhethertheysteallittlethingsfromtheworkplacetowhethertheyare
organizedandpunctual.Ibelievethatmyworkethicsareoverallgood.Ipullmyweightand
morewhenitcomestowork.Ithinkthatthereisnopointtodoingworkifitisgoingtobe
average.Ialsostayhonestwithmysuperiorswhenthingsgowrong.Myworkethics,however,
canbeimproved.SometimesItendtoprocrastinateandcramallmyworkinattheveryend,
whenitisgoingtobedueandsometimesIjustcompletelylackthemotivationtodowork.

Thosearemybiggestproblemsbyfar.Idonotthinkthatthereisarelationbetweenqualityof
workethicandonesage.Everythingisamixedbag.Therecanbelazyfiftyfouryearolds
workingandtherecanbehardworkingtwelveyearolds.Peopleasawholevarysomuchthat
thereisnosinglewordtodescribetheworkethicofonesinglegroupsuchashighschool
teenagersotherthandifferent.
ItisclearthatthenumerousinterviewsIhaveconductedareeachdifferentintheirown
regard.Theseinterviews,inaway,representthevarietyofdifferentworkethicsthatsomeone
mightencounterintheworkplace.Theinterviewsthemselvesweredifferentjustaseachperson
mighthavedifferentworkethics.Pastexperiencesandprejudicesmightsometimesbeusedto
determineifsomeonehasgoodworkethics.However,theonlywaytoknowforsureisto
observethatpersonatwork.
