NSEJS / INJSO

Indian National Junior Science Olympiad (INJSO) is a competitive examination open to

students of all countries in the world, primarily studying in secondary schools. All basic
subjects of Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics) are given roughly
equal representation in the IJSO examination.

Stages
The Junior Science Olympiad program will follow the following 5 stages:

Stage I: National Standard Examination in Junior Science (NSEJS),

Stage II: Indian National Junior Science Olympiad (INJSO),

Stage III: Orientation cum Selection Camp (OCSC) in junior science,

Stage IV: Pre-departure Training Camp (PDT) for IJSO,

Stage V: Participation in International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO).

Eligibility
All Indian students who are born on or after January 1, 1998 and, in addition, are in
Class X or lower as of November 30, 2012, are eligible to appear in NSEJS 2012 2013.
If they qualify in the NSEJS, they will be eligible for subsequent stages leading to
participation in International Junior Science Olympiad 2013.

Syllabus
The syllabus for INJSO will be broadly equivalent to the secondary school level (upto
Class X) of CBSE. The different basic subjects of science (physics, chemistry, biology
and mathematics) will have roughly equal emphasis. The syllabus is, however, only a
broad guideline. Questions and problems in National Olympiads are usually nonconventional and of high difficulty level, comparable to International Olympiads.

Awards And Recognitions

For Stage I:Top 300 students would be selected for the second stage , certificate to top
10% student from every exam centre ; Merit certificates awrded to top 1% students of
each state in each subject ; Special merit certificate will be awarded to National Top 1%
studentsFinal Stage: The 6 member student team and 3 teacher leaders will constitute
the delegation to represent India at the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO).

Based on the performance in Stage V eligible students are awarded Gold /

Silver & Bronze Medals.

NSO / IMO
National Science Olympiad is organized every year to motivate students to strive for
better and deeper understanding of scientific facts and data and to enhance their
reasoning, analytical and problem solving skills. All school students from class 1st
onwards are invited to participate in this unique contest that tests their understanding,
level of knowledge, applications and power of reasoning. NSO is one of the most
prestigious exams in Asia.
The IMO (International Mathematics Olympiad) is a means to identify and encourage the
mathematical creativity of children in schools across India and abroad.

Students get a chance to be assessed at national / international level and are

How to Participate
Registration: The event is open to the students of classes 1st to 12th and registrations
are received from the schools in the prescribed pro-forma. Registration sheet for the
school / students and the information booklet are posted to the schools all over India
and abroad.
Exam Fees: A nominal participation fee is charged from each student. Part of it is
retained by the school for its expenses as exam centre. Details about the fee / mode of
payment etc. are given in the School Registration Forms sent to schools.

Selection Procedure
The National Science Olympiad invites students from classes 1st to 12th to participate
and excel at national level. The competition is in two levels.

The first level of the test is organized in the respective schools of the participants
during the school hours.The level-1 competition is a written objective-type test of

60 minutes duration comprising 50 objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions.

IMO:The syllabus of the IMO is the Mathematics syllabus as is prescribed by the

For class 5 to 10: The participant has to answer 50 questions in 60 minutes.

RMO
The Mathematical Olympiad Programme in India, which leads to participation of Indian
students in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is organized by the Homi
Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) on behalf of the National Board for Higher
Mathematics (NBHM) of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India.
This programme is one of the major initiatives undertaken by the NBHM. Its main
purpose is to spot mathematical talent among pre-university students in the country.

Stages

Stage I: Regional Mathematical Olympiad) (RMO and pre-RMO,

Stage II: Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO),

Stage III: International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC),

Stage IV: Pre-departure Training Camp (PDT) for IMO,

Stage V: Participation in International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

Eligibility
Students from Class IX, X, XI and XII are eligible to appear for the RMO. Highly
motivated and well prepared students from Class VIII may also take the RMO at the
discretion of the Regional Coordinator.

Qualification and Eligibility Criteria for the Second Stage

The RMO is a 3-hour written test with 6 or 7 problems. On the basis of the performance
in RMO, a certain number of students from each region is selected for Stage 2 (INMO).

Syllabus
The syllabus for Mathematical Olympiad (regional, national and international) is predegree college mathematics. The areas covered are arithmetic of integers, geometry,
quadratic equations and expressions, trigonometry, co-ordinate geometry, system of
linear equations, permutations and combination, factorisation of polynomial,
inequalities, elementary combinatorics, probability theory and number theory, finite
series and complex numbers and elementary graph theory. The syllabus does not
include calculus and statistics. The major areas from which problems are given are
number theory, geometry, algebra and combinatorics. The syllabus is in a sense spread
over Class XI to Class XII levels, but the problems under each topic involve high level of
difficulty and sophistication. The difficulty level increases from RMO to INMO to IMO.

IBO
The International Biology Olympiad (IBO) started in 1990. It is an annual event open to
pre-university students. It serves as a benchmark for biology education at the higher
secondary school level.
India started participating in IBO from the year 2000. India hosted the 19th IBO in July
2008 in Mumbai.

Stages

Stage I: National Standard Examination in Biology (NSEB),

Stage II: Indian National Biology Olympiad (INBO),

Stage III: Orientation cum Selection Camp (OCSC) in biology,

Stage IV: Pre-departure Training Camp (PDT) for IBO,

Eligibility

All Indian students who are born on or after July 1, 1993 and, in addition, are in Class XII
or lower as of November 30, 2012, are eligible to appear for NSEB 2012 2013. A
student may appear for more than one subject provided the examination schedule
allows it. See information about the examination schedule under various subjects.
Students who have passed Class XII are not eligible to enroll for NSEB.

Qualification and Eligibility Criteria for the Second Stage

The aim of the first stage examination is to have a wide reach, to progressively increase
this reach and to attain nationwide representation for stage II without overly
compromising on merit. Hence the selection to the stage II examinations i.e. Indian
National Olympiad Examinations (INOs) is based on the following scheme.

Eligibility Clause: A candidate must secure a score equal to or greater than a

Minimum Admissible Score (MAS) to be eligible for the Stage II INO exam leading to
the International Olympiad . The MAS for a given subject will be 40% of the
maximum score in that subject.

Proportional Representation Clause: The number of students selected for

Stage II (INO) in each subject is around 300. The number of candidates who
appeared for NSE in 2011-12 in a subject from centers in each State or Union
Territory (UT) will be considered the baseline for calculating the number qualifying
from centers in that State or UT for that subject. Suppose this number in 2011-12
for centers in a given State in a given subject is S, and the total number that
appeared in 2011-12 in that subject for the country is T, then the number selected
to Stage II in that subject from that State would be S/T times 300, rounded off to the
nearest higher integer. In the event of a tie at the last position in the list all students
with the same marks at this position will qualify to appear for the Stage II
examination. The selected students must nevertheless satisfy the eligibility clause
laid out above. The total number to be selected from centers in each State for each
subject will be displayed on the IAPT and HBCSE websites.

Minimum Representation Clause: Notwithstanding the proportional

representation clause the number of students selected for INO from each State and
UT must be at least one, provided that the eligibility clause is satisfied.

Merit Clause: Given the eligibility clause, it is conceivable that 300 students
may not qualify for Stage II in a subject. Should this occur, the shortfall (from 300)
will be selected based purely on merit without further consideration to proportional
representation and minimum representation clauses. In the event of a tie at the last
position in the list all students with the same marks at this position will qualify to
appear for the Stage II examination.

Syllabus
The syllabus for NSEB is broadly equivalent to the senior secondary level (Class XI and
Class XII) of CBSE Biology. This is only a rough guideline, and there is no detailed
syllabus given for NSEB.

Awards and Recognition

In each subject, certificates are given to top 10% students of every centre.

Merit Certificates are awarded totop 1% students in each state, in each subject.

Special Merit Certificates and a prize (book) will be awarded to National top 1%
students in each subject.

Gold Medals are awarded to the Top 35 students from INPhO, INChO and INBO
examinations.

NTSE
National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) is a national level scholarship program in
India started in the year 1963. The purpose of the scheme was to identify talented
students and nurture their talents. Talent refers to the potentiality that manifests itself
in a high level of performance in one or more specialised areas. Therefore, it covers
areas like Science, Social Science, Engineering, Medicine, Management and Law. It is

organized by an NCERT and it honors and helps talented students by providing financial
assistance in the form of a monthly scholarship. For the courses in Basic Sciences,
Social Sciences and Commerce, this assistance is provided up to Ph.D. level whereas for
professional courses like Engineering, Medicine, Management and Law this assistance is
given only up to Post Graduation. The scheme is open to students of Indian nationality. It
helps students to proliferate their mental level and also helps them to sharpen their
minds.

NTSE for the Session 2012-2013

1.

NCERT will conduct the NTS Examination for students studying in Class X.

2.

The examination will consist of Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Ability
Test (SAT).

3.

Quota for State/UT will be computed proportionally on the basis of students

enrolment in Class IX and X.

4.

The amount of scholarship will be Rs. 1250/- per month for all the students
studying in Class XI onwards(irrespective of class/course) except for Ph.D., wherein
it is paid as per UGC norms.

5.

The scholarships under the present scheme are awarded to the candidates for
pursuing courses in sciences and social sciences up to doctoral level and in
professional courses like medicine and engineering up to second-degree level
subject to the fulfillment of the conditions.

Eligibility
Students of Class X studying in recognized schools including Kendriya Vidyalaya,
Navodaya Vidyalaya, Sainik School etc. of Indian nationality whether they study in India
or abroad are eligible to appear NTS examination. There will be no domicile restriction.

Scholarship
On the basis of the NTSE, 1000 scholarships are awarded all over India to each student
appearing for Class X examinations. Awardees of National Talent Search Examination
will receive a sum of Rs. 1250/- per month as per rules.

15% scholarships are reserved for students belonging to the SC category.

7.5% scholarships for students belonging to the ST category.

3.

3% scholarships for Physically Challenged Group of Students.

Selection Procedure
The selection process of NTSE is comprises of two-stages. The first stage selection
conducts individual State/UT through a written exam while, the second stage selection
at the national level is carried out by the NCERT for those who qualified in Stage-I.

Stage-I or State level examination:

The state/UT level examination has two parts for nominating the required number of
candidates for the second level test to be conducted by the NCERT.

Part-I: Mental Ability Test (MAT) In MAT, questions on analogies, classification,

series, pattern perception, hidden figures, coding-encoding, block assembly,
problem solving etc.are asked.

Part-II: Scholastic Ability Test (SAT) In SAT, questions are asked on Mathematics,

Each test (MAT & SAT) will be of 90 minutes duration and will comprise of 100 objective
questions with 100 marks. All questions in the booklets are objective type. For each
question FOUR possible answers are given, but only one is correct. Your task is to find
out the correct answer and mark your choice in the Answer Sheet.

Stage-II or National level examination:

Candidates acquiring more than the required percentage in the state level examination
and standing within a specified number of top ranks (state quota) are eligible to appear
for the national level examination (about top 4000 students from the entire country).
NCERT conducts the National Level NTS examination.

Part-I: Mental Ability Test (MAT) Questions are asked on analogies, classification,
series, pattern perception, hidden figures, coding-encoding, block assembly,
problem solving etc.

Part-II: Scholastic Ability Test (SAT) In this test, questions are asked on

questions out of which 90 Objective (35-Sciences, 35-Social Sciences & 20-Maths) and

answers are given, but only one is correct. You have to mark that correct one.

There is no prescribed syllabus for the NTSE. However, the standard of questions shall
be conforming to the level of Classes IX and X. A separate booklet called Learn about

State Quota

Where to Submit Application Form

The completed application forms duly signed by the Principal of the school should be
submitted to the State Liaison Officers before the last date. The candidate as well as the
Principal of the school must adhere to the last date for submission of the Application
Form. Different states may have different last dates for submission. Please confirm from
the liaison officer of your state, the address at which the completed forms are to be
submitted. The State wise contact of the liaison officers are available in the NCERT
website. All queries related to application form should be directed to the State Liaison
Officers (LOs). No application should be sent to NCERT.

Examination Fees
States and Union Territories may notify the fee required to be paid for the Stage-I
examination. However, NCERT does not charge any fee for the Stage-II examination.

NSTSE
National Level Science Talent Search Examination (NSTSE) is a diagnostic test which
actually helps students to improve. It is a scientifically designed, skill-based assessment
developed in India for Indian schools, after a detailed study of the syllabi of different
central and state boards. Rather than testing rote learning, it focuses on measuring how
well SKILLS and CONCEPTS underlying the school syllabus have been learnt by the
student. The test provides information on the strengths and weaknesses of individual
students and also entire classes.

KVPY
Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a program started by the Department of
Science and Technology (DST), Government of India to encourage students of Basic
Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to take up research careers in these areas. The aim
of the program is to identify, assist and encourage talented students with aptitude for
research and growth in the country.
The Department of Science and Technology the root agency of the Government has
entrusted the overall responsibility for organizing the scheme to the Indian Institute of
Science (IISc), Bangalore and set up a National Advisory Committee (NAC) for
overseeing its implementation and a National Scientific Committee (NSC) look after both
the administrative and academic aspects of the KVPY Program.
The selection of students from those studying in +1, +2, any U.G. Program in Science /
Medicine and also Engineering students having aptitude for scientific research, are
carried out by IISc (Bangalore), IIT-Bombay (Mumbai), and ICMR (New Delhi),
respectively, in association with two Zonal Centers one at (IISER), Kolkata and another
at Mumbai (HBCSE, TIFR). Generous scholarship and Contingency grant are provided (up
to the pre-Ph.D. level) to the selected students.

Fellowship
The advertisement for the KVPY Fellowship appears in all the national dailies normally
on the Technology Day the May 11 and Second Sunday of July every year. These
Fellowships are only for Indian Nationals studying in India. Selection procedures are
different for SP (Basic Sciences) and SP (Medicine). All of them, however, include an
interview for final selection.

Syllabus
There is no prescribed syllabus for the written test. The written test aims to test the
understanding and analytical ability of the student than his/her factual knowledge.
However, students are tested for the syllabus up to class XII.

Awards and Recognitions

The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, offers attractive
fellowships (Rs. 4000 to Rs. 7000 per month) and contingency grants (Four months
fellowship per year) for students studying in Basic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.
Selection to the program takes into account academic excellence and demonstrated
interest in pursuing a research career.

academic year 2012-2013 and have secured a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST) marks

Examination. Students promoted through both the Summative Assessments-II
conducted by the school and conducted by the Board are eligible to apply, if they satisfy
eligibility criteria. If the candidates have obtained a letter grade in the qualified
examination, they are requested to convert it into an appropriate % and fill-up the
application form. {The students under the mentorship list will not be eligible for any
fellowship. Their fellowship will be activated when these students enroll in an
undergraduate course in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./Int.M.Sc./M.S.) after their XII
Standard/(+2).}
Stream SX: Applicable for the Students enrolled in XII Standard/ (+2) (Science
subjects).

Stream SB: Applicable for the Students enrolled in the 1st year of B. Sc./

Selection Procedure
Aptitude Test: After scrutiny of application forms and based on the performance in the
Board Examination(s), all the eligible candidates from Streams SA, SX and SB have to
appear for a written aptitude test (conducted both in Hindi and English). The test will be
conducted at different centers across the country on 4th November 2012. The details of
the venue of the aptitude tests and their seat number will be put on the KVPY website in
first week of October 2012.
Interview: Candidates will be called for the interview based on the performance in the
aptitude test, which is the final stage of the selection procedure.
Admit Card:

Students who have applied online may download the admit card for the aptitude
test from the website from the second week of October 2012.

Students, who have applied with a hard copy, admit card will be sent by speed
post.

Exam Pattern:

The question paper in SA Stream will be both multiple choice objective and
descriptive types.

In the objective type, 4 choices for the correct answer will be provided and the
choice for the correct answer has to be made.

3.

In the descriptive type solution to a problem, formula for a sum, etc., has to be
worked out and written.

4.

There is no negative marking.

Indian National Mathematics Olympiad (INMO)

What is INMO ?
The Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) is a high school mathematics
competition held annually in India since 1989. It is the second tier in the Indian team
selection procedure for the International Mathematical Olympiad and is conducted by
the HomiBhaba Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) under the aegis of the National
Board of Higher Mathematics
The qualifying Indian National Mathematics Olympiad gets a chance to go to a training
camp at the HomiBhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) which is offered under
the aegis of the National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM).

Who can appear for Indian National Mathematics

Olympiad Test?

In order to appear the INMO test, candidates first need to write the Regional
Mathematical Olympiad of their respective state or region, usually held on the first
Sunday of December of the previous year.
Around thirty students are selected from each region, to write the INMO, which is
usually held on the first Sunday of February. Among these 500 or more students, a total
of around thirty qualify the INMO and are sent to the month-long training camp at
HBSCE to prepare for international Olympiad math.
At the end of the training camp, six students are selected to sit for the International
Math Olympiad (IMO)

Where and when does the test take place?

Usually, the INMO is held on the first Sunday of February. This year, the examination
was held on Sunday, February 1, 2015, during 1.00 -- 5.00 pm. The venue for the
examination was Kolkata

What is the structure of the test?

The INMO examination paper comprises six problems to be solved over a time of four
hours. These problems are in the areas of algebra, geometry, number theory and
combinatorics.
Calculus is not within the scope of the exam but students are allowed to use the
calculus-based approaches to solve problems.

Why should I opt for INMO?

Besides a chance to appear for International Math Olympiad, students who qualify INMO
enjoy other benefits too:

They are automatically eligible to get a seat in the B.Sc. (Hons) Mathematics
course in the Chennai Mathematical Institute

They can also appear directly for the interview for B. Stat or B. Math courses at
the prestigious Indian Statistical Institute (ISI)

The candidates choosing mathematics further for their studies can apply for an
NBHM scholarship of Rs 2,500 per month. Moreover, if they have special interest in
Mathematics but are not pursuing it as a subject, they are offered an annual cash
award of Rs 9,000

INMO qualifiers are also eligible for the Kishore VaigyanikProtsahanYojana (KVPY)
fellowship, if they pursue further study in science in India. This fellowship is worth Rs.
4000 per month

There are also cash rewards for those who win gold, silver or bronze at IMO of Rs
5,000, Rs 4,000, and Rs 3,000 respectively
