Steps/Procedures:
Distributestudenthandoutfor"OpenMind"tostudents.ExplainthatstudentswillneedtoselectacharacterfromPersepolis,or
createtheirownasexplainedunder*OPTION.Showstudentmodels.Astheyreadandlearnmoreabouttheircharacter,theywill
wanttowriteordrawsymbolsinsidethe"OpenMind"outlineinordertofillout,explain,andunderstandtheircharacter.Thisin
depthlookandanalysiswillhelpthemcreateastoryfromtheircharacterspointofview.

Distribute"GraphicStory"frames(studentsmayalsouseanonlineorcomputerprogramtodesignownframes)tostudentsand
explainthattheywillbedrawingandcreatingtheirowngraphicstory,usingthegraphicnovelgenre.Theycanuseinformation
gatheredfromactivitiesandtheirreadingtounderstandindepththeircharacter.Studentswillalsobecreativeindevelopingtheir
characterandstory.

ExplainthattheirgraphicstorywillbetheirownrecreationorcreationofaneventderivedfromPersepolistoldfromtheircharacters
perspective.

*OPTION:oropenittoothercontextsthathavestrongthematicconnections(issueslikegenderroles,socialclass,exile,torture,
etc.)orofferaresponsetoouressentialquestions.

Explainthattheirstoryshouldhavebeginning,middle,andend.Thestoryshouldhaveatleast20differentframes.Thegraphics
shouldbehanddrawnwithdetailnotstickfigurerepresentations.Studentswillalsocreateanattractivefrontandbackcoverwitha
title.

Beforetheystartdrawing,askstudentstopairupandtakeouttheirbooks.

Usingatchartrecord:
1)literaryfeatures(theArtiststechnique)
2)thepagenumberoftheexample.
Aspairsandlaterasaclass,youwillcreatealistofartfulsceneswheresometechniqueisutilizedeffectively.

Modelthispracticewithafewonlineexamplesanddiscusstheimpactofeachtechnique.Youaredevelopingknowledgeand
understandingofthegenre.

Afterfiveortenminutes,askeachgrouptoidentifyatleastonetechnique.Askstudentstobringacompleteroughdrafttothenext
class.
